Founded in 1965, UC Irvine is a member of the Association of American Universities and ranked among the nation’s top 10 public universities. This job posting describes the role of Physician Assistant PD in the Department of Surgery, primarily located at a new hospital in Irvine, California.

Your Role on the Team

The Physician Assistant PD will be immersed in the management and coordination of all inpatient care of surgical patients, across general and specialty services, including the ICU. Inpatient services include colorectal surgery, ENT, general surgery, gynecology, hand surgery, minimally invasive surgery, plastic surgery, surgical oncology, thoracic, urology, vascular. Duties include consults, inpatient care, evaluating care, ordering diagnostics, creating treatment plans, sign-out at shift changes, rounds, and communication with surgery teams. The PA will be involved in resuscitations from ED and ICU, coordinate procedures (scheduling operations and other procedures), admit/discharge patients, review critical labs, obtain histories, perform physical examinations, and coordinate multi-disciplinary care with patients and referring physicians. The PA may assist in the operating room and must demonstrate professional development and competency validation. This position is represented by UPTE.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate inpatient surgical care across services and levels of care, including ICU.
  • Perform consults, admissions, discharges, and perioperative management.
  • Order diagnostics, develop treatment plans, and participate in hand-offs and rounds.
  • Triages patient queries, reviews labs, and maintains comprehensive medical histories.
  • Provide multidisciplinary care coordination and patient education.
  • Assist in the operating room as needed, in collaboration with surgeons.

Qualifications

  • Ability to obtain UCIMC Allied Health Professional Privileges prior to hire.
  • Clear communication of medical information to patients, families, and staff.
  • Maintain clinical competence in the specialty area; ability to be trained on specialized equipment and procedures.
  • Knowledge of applicable billing practices for PA services.
  • Graduate from an accredited PA program; eligibility/certification by the California state Board or National Board of Medical Examiners.
  • Current BLS and ACLS certification; NCCPA certification at time of hire and maintained thereafter.
  • Current California license to practice, DEA number, and NPI (or obtain prior to employment).
  • Minimum 2 years of Physician Assistant clinical experience.

Preferred

  • Knowledge of Windows and MS Office; experience in Trauma/Critical Care and Surgical Critical Care as PA.
  • Familiarity with UC policies and procedures; bilingual in Spanish and/or Vietnamese.
