Your Role on the Team
The position of Senior Physician Assistant in the Department of Surgery requires a highly competent, independent yet team‑oriented individual who will manage inpatient care of surgical patients at our new hospital in Irvine, California.
Inpatient surgical services include colorectal surgery, ENT, general surgery, gynecology, hand surgery, minimally invasive surgery, plastic surgery, surgical oncology, thoracic, urology, and vascular. The physician assistant will handle consults, inpatient care, and management, including evaluating care, ordering diagnostics, creating treatment plans, participating in shift hand‑off, rounding, communicating with surgery teams, overseeing surgical consultations, resuscitations, procedure coordination, admissions and discharges, triage phone calls, reviewing labs, performing physical examinations, and overall patient care. They must demonstrate advanced medical knowledge, clinical competence, sound judgment, professional communication, timely documentation, and commitment to professional development and competency validation. The PA will also assist in the operating room, working closely with surgeons and other professionals to provide optimal patient care throughout surgical procedures.
Requirements
- Ability to obtain UCIMC Allied Health Professional Privileges prior to hire.
- HIPAA and other required training completion (Medical Center Annual TB screening, applicable JCAHO tests).
- Demonstrate understanding of and adherence to privacy, confidentiality, and security policies related to PHI.
- Possess the skill, knowledge, and ability essential for assignment duties.
- Demonstrate customer service skills appropriate to the job.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships across the program and UCI Health System.
- Exercise diplomacy and flexibility when interacting with physicians, nurses, other paramedical personnel, administrators, emergency and law enforcement officers.
- Clearly communicate medical information verbally and over the telephone.
- Excellent written communication skills for clear medical reports, laboratory data and progress notes.
- Maintain a work pace appropriate to the workload; be trained to use specialized medical equipment and procedures.
- Current, active, unrestricted licensed Physician Assistant in California.
- Active Board Certification from NCCPA.
- Active National Provider Identifier (NPI) number.
- Current DEA number.
- Current BLS and ACLS certification.
- Two or more years of experience in a relevant setting.
Preferred
- Knowledge of Windows and MS Office (Excel, Word, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Experience in Trauma/Critical Care.
- Bilingual in Spanish and/or Vietnamese.
- Familiarity with UC policies and procedures.
