Job Summary
Memorial Hermann SE campus seeks a strong generalist to join our team as a Sr. Medical Technologist on day shift. The position will oversee Point of Care and Microbiology. Experience with Point of Care and/or Microbiology is highly desired but not required; the successful candidate will be ASCP or AMT certified. Senior level experience is a plus. The role will work 3 × 12‑hour shifts, 6 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., including rotating weekends.
Minimum Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in a biological science is required (equivalency required for foreign education). Incumbents hired into this job prior to 7/1/2019 do not need a bachelor’s degree.
- Licenses / Certifications: Medical Technologist (ASCP) or Medical Technologist (AMT), Certified CLS (ASCP), Certified MLS (ASCP or ASCP‑International) CM, or Cytotechnologist (CT) (ASCP).
- Experience / Knowledge / Skills: At least two (2) years of pertinent experience in a high‑complexity laboratory in the assigned/specified area; completion of Senior Medical Technologist skills competency within one year of accepting the position.
Position Responsibilities
- Performs and documents test results, quality control, and maintenance procedures according to technical policy and procedures; troubleshoots instruments as needed.
- Oversees and evaluates the performance of testing, quality control, maintenance, and procedures for the assigned area.
- Prepares monthly quality summary reports documenting instrument performance, quality control, linearity, service visits, and clinical service issues.
- Coordinates service visits.
- Evaluates and maintains technical procedures appropriate to the department/facility; ensures competency at all workstations; writes procedures; demonstrates working knowledge of laboratory equipment and laboratory information systems.
- Ensures compliance with regulatory standards from agencies such as TJC, FDA, CAP, AABB, CMS, HCFA, and CLIA; participates in CAP mock inspections and off‑site system inspections.
- Teaches, assesses competency, mentors, and/or precepts other laboratory employees and students in technical procedures, policies, quality control, maintenance, performance improvement, production efficiency, and customer service.
- Provides input into initial, six‑month, and annual training, performance appraisals, and competency for Medical Technologists.
- Coaches and provides input to the Lab Director or Manager for counseling associations performance, error reports, and employee recognition program.
- Demonstrates leadership and performs duties to promote quality patient care, customer satisfaction, safety, cost efficiency, and the compliance improvement process; may participate in the interview process for job applicants.
- Supports intradepartmental cohesiveness by practicing teamwork, acknowledging employee strengths, communicating effectively with laboratory staff, MLS, and Laboratory Director, and reporting issues, observations, and solutions.
- Interacts with hospital personnel, volunteers, physicians, and patients regarding specimens and orders that enter the laboratory and/or reporting results in accordance with laboratory policies and procedures.
- Ensures safe care for patients, staff, and visitors while adhering to Memorial Hermann policies, procedures, and standards and staying within budgetary specifications including time, supply, and productivity management.
- Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting mandatory and continuing education and skills competency requirements; supports department‑based goals that contribute to organizational success; serves as preceptor, mentor, and resource to less experienced staff.
- Demonstrates commitment to caring for every community member by creating compassionate and personalized experiences; models Memorial Hermann service standards through safe, caring, personalized, and efficient experiences for patients and colleagues.
