Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry. This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.Role PurposeCorning is a global leader in specialty glass and optical communications — and our Wilmington, NC facility is where the fiber that connects the world gets made.

As a Senior Development Engineer, you'll design and industrialize next-generation optical fiber manufacturing platforms, turning complex technical challenges into solutions that improve quality, yield, and efficiency at scale. This is a hands-on, high-impact engineering role at the intersection of materials science, process engineering, and manufacturing innovation.Primary Day-to-Day ResponsibilitiesDesign, develop, and industrialize improvements to optical fiber manufacturing platforms (equipment and process), from concept through validation and full-scale implementationApply scientific methods, root cause analysis, and structured experimentation to identify and resolve manufacturing process limitationsPartner with cross-functional teams across technology development and manufacturing to drive improvements in yield, throughput, quality, and cost efficiencyTroubleshoot glassmaking platforms, execute equipment validation testing, and develop data-driven recommendationsDocument and communicate technical findings, project updates, and recommendations to team members and leadershipRequired QualificationsBachelor's or Master's degree in Chemical, Materials, Ceramics, or a related Engineering disciplineMinimum years of experience in process or mechanical engineering with a track record of delivering measurable business outcomesStrong foundation in physical phenomena and engineering principles applied to manufacturing processesProven ability to design experiments, analyze complex data sets, and drive root cause resolutionExperience translating technical findings into engineering requirements and process or equipment designsProficiency in data analysis tools such as JMP, Python, or Power BIComfortable working hands-on with manufacturing equipment, instruments, and measurement devices in a production environmentDesired QualificationsExperience with optical fiber, glassmaking, or specialty materials manufacturing processes and equipmentExperience leading or mentoring technical engineering teamsProficiency in computer-aided engineering (CAE) tools (e.g., ANSYS, MATLAB, Fluent, Aspen)Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Autodesk Inventor)Familiarity with fiber optics fundamentalsThis position does not support immigration sponsorship. The range for this position is $101,784.00 - $139,953.00 assuming full time status.
