About the Role

We are looking for a Sr Corporate Counsel to join the team! This role requires high-quality legal analysis and exceptional judgment. You must have strong oral and written communication skills, excellent interpersonal and influencing skills, an ability to anticipate and deliver legal support to satisfy the needs of a dynamic business team, and the flexibility to manage a variety of assignments at a time.

What You’ll Do

  • You will deliver strategic and tactical legal support for all aspects of our consumer finance activities, primarily related to our unsecured lending products, auto loan refinance, and point‑of‑sale financing across all stages of our members’ experiences.
  • You will serve as a trusted advisor and partner to business teams, including advising on the development of new products and services and changes to existing ones, advising on consumer finance and other laws and regulations applicable to our business, issues management, and review of marketing and UX materials.
  • You will monitor and analyze federal, state, and local regulatory developments concerning lending, servicing, and other activities that may impact our bank and engage with business partners to ensure understanding and operational readiness.
  • You will partner with our Compliance team to provide comprehensive risk support, including assisting in the investigation of and response to consumer complaints and the management of internal and external compliance reviews and testing.
  • You will collaborate with team members to identify issues and improve existing processes and procedures so that legal requirements are consistently interpreted and applied across the bank.
  • You will drive and support matters that align with the bank’s strategic objectives.
  • You will assist the Legal Department with any other assignments that may be delegated to you.

About You

  • J.D. from an accredited law school and licensed, in good standing, in one or more states to practice law (licensing in the states where the bank has offices is not required).
  • At least 3‑5 years of combined law firm, government, and/or in‑house legal department experience, with at least 1‑2 years of experience in consumer finance law and regulations; a preference for in‑house experience at a bank, credit union, or fintech.
  • Demonstrated experience advising on some or all of the following laws and regulations: TILA / Regulation Z; ECOA / Regulation B; FCRA / Regulation V; BSA / AML; EFTA / Regulation E; TCPA, TSR, CAN‑SPAM, and/or state law analogues; FDCPA and/or state law analogues; UDAAP; and GLBA / Regulation P.
  • Adapts well to a rapidly changing business environment and thrives on innovation and change. Eager to learn new things and embrace new technology, including artificial intelligence tools in the legal space.
  • Comfortable in a legal support role that extends beyond delivering advice to executing and implementing legal advice with business partners.
  • Able to manage multiple transactions or tasks, take on new responsibilities, and advise on novel issues.
  • Proven ability to build collaborative relationships with internal partners and external customers, influence business leaders, and maintain a high level of integrity.

Work Location

San Francisco, Lehi, or New York (eligible offices for this role). The locations foster in‑person collaboration. Our team is in‑office Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. In‑person attendance is essential for this role’s success; remote placement will not be considered. Happen Bank offers relocation based on actual job level.

Time Zone Requirements

Local hours (PT, ET). While the position will primarily work local hours, the ideal candidate will be flexible when working across time zones as needed.

Travel Requirements

As needed travel to Happen Bank offices and/or other locations.

Compensation

The target base salary range for this position is $137,000–$220,000. Salary will be determined by job‑related knowledge, experience, education, skills, and location. Base salary is just one part of Happen Bank’s total rewards package. Eligibility for long‑term awards (equity) and an annual bonus (based on company performance, employee performance, and eligible earnings) is included.
