The Department of Pediatrics of the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University is the organizational unit. The Department of Pediatrics is in accord with this primary purpose. This purpose will be achieved by providing comprehensive evaluation and specialized treatment of children and caregivers who have mental health and medical needs.

Job Duties

The Clinical Therapist will provide comprehensive therapy services to children ages 5-21 who have medical and mental health needs. The Clinical Therapist will conduct intake sessions and assessments with patients/family members referred by healthcare providers, will function as a liaison between the patient, medical clinic, family members, and other providers. The Clinical Therapist will provide short and long-term individual, group, and family therapy utilizing a variety of therapy methodologies including EMDR, TFCBT, CPT, CBT, and play therapy. The Clinical Therapist will also consult with other medical providers and professionals as needed regarding assessment and treatment issues, family dynamics, mental health diagnosis and their effects on the medical health and needs of the child, and treatment goals. The therapist will see patients in an outpatient setting.

Clinical Support Position – NOT SUBJECT TO STATE HUMAN RESOURCES ACT.

This position provides eligibility to participate in the UNC Optional Retirement Program (ORP) with matching employer contributions and employee control of investment choices, along with eligibility to participate in various Voluntary Supplemental Retirement Plans (401k, 403b, 457). This position is not eligible to participate in the NC Teachers’ and State Employees’ Retirement System (TSERS). It also offers multiple voluntary options for Medical, Dental, Vision, and Life Insurance as well as various supplemental plans including Critical Illness, Flexible Spending Accounts, Cancer, and Disability.

Licenses and Certifications

Minimum Education/Experience

Bachelor’s degree in a Human Services discipline with coursework related to the area of assignment. Some positions may require certification to practice as a certified or licensed Clinical Social Worker as required by the North Carolina Social Work Certification Board. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

License Or Certification Required By Statute Or Regulation

Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) preferred. Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) or Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LCMHC) will also be considered. All licenses must be current with their respective Board and unrestricted.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

Master’s degree from an accredited school of Social Work and three years of social work or counseling experience; or a Master’s degree in a counseling field and four years of social work or counseling experience. A working knowledge of pediatric diagnoses and child development is desirable. Candidates should possess excellent communication, organizational, and critical thinking skills. Experience working with patients in a medical setting and extensive knowledge of community resources are desirable.
