Job Description

A (Registered) Sleep Technologist Polysomnography, also known as a Registered Sleep Technologist, works under the general supervision of the Sleep Medical Director, Sleep Center Manager or designee to provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders including in center, inpatient, diagnostic, therapeutic interventions, comprehensive patient care and direct patient education. A Registered Sleep Technologist is able to perform the duties defined for a Sleep Technologist and is able to provide minimal oversight of other sleep center staff. The sleep technologist is credentialed in sleep technology.

Responsibilities

  • Collect, analyze and integrate patient information in order to identify and meet the patient-specific needs (Physical/mental limitations, current emotional/physiological status regarding the testing procedure, pertinent medical/social history), and to determine final testing.
  • Parameters/procedures in conjunction with the physician’s orders and other documentation. Follows procedural protocols to ensure appropriate data collection.
  • Applies surface electrodes to the patient according to procedure protocols and accepted published standards. Explains pre-testing, testing, and post-testing procedures to the patient.
  • Maintains, prepares and calibrates all the equipment required for testing to ensure proper functioning and makes adjustments if necessary. Performs appropriate physiologic calibrations to ensure proper signal and documents adjustments if necessary.
  • Monitors the recording while routinely documenting observations, changes in procedure, and significant events to facilitate scoring. Performs the correct calibrations and “Lights out” and “Lights on” procedures. Must be able to follow protocols and initiate the correct intervention for the health and safety of the patient.
  • Oversees and performs difficult pediatric polysomnographic procedures and therapeutic interventions.
  • Provides instruction and education to the sleep disorder patient population. Serves as C-PAP clinical liaison as required.
  • Scores recordings and clinical events based on accepted professional guidelines and prints reports based on Sleep Center protocols.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Oversees the work of Sleep Technicians during night shift and assists in their training.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Education Required: High School Diploma
  • Education Preferred: 2 years college preferred.
  • Experience Preferred: Healthcare and Pediatric experience a plus.
  • RT/CRT experience is a plus.

License and Certification

  • CPR or BLS Healthcare certification within 1 month of hire and maintained thereafter.
  • Certification by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists as a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist, Certified Polysomnographic Technologist, or a RT or CRT Sleep Disorders Specialty as well as complying with all certification requirements. RPSGT, CPGST or Certification by National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) either CRT-SDS or RRT-SDS.

  • Review and evaluate sleep studies and provide feedback to staff.
  • Demonstrate the ability to analyze complex situations and apply policy.
  • Comply with professional standards and code of conduct.
  • Assist the medical director and/or manager in some aspects of sleep center operations.
