WDE is a 750 MW electric generating station on 35 acres located in West Deptford, NJ along the Delaware River. The facility includes two Siemens SGT6-PAC 5000F Combustion Turbine Generators (CTGs), two CMI Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSGs), one Alstom STF-30C Steam Turbine Generator (STG), a mechanical draft cooling tower, water and wastewater treatment systems, and related balance of plant and auxiliary equipment.

The Shift Operations Supervisor on a rotational basis will be responsible for leading a team of inside (Control Room / Board Operators) and outside (Operations Technician) Operations staff to ensure Operational Excellence at WDE Generating Station. They will provide a disciplined, rigorous, and systematic focus on process execution, systems and procedures. The Operations Supervisor will be responsible for delivering input to the facility in strategic direction by helping develop both departmental and site objectives.

Job Summary

The Shift Operations Supervisor is responsible for the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the generating station during assigned shifts. This position leads and directs operating personnel, oversees plant systems and infrastructure, coordinates maintenance and outage activities, and ensures compliance with all safety, environmental, regulatory, and company requirements. As the senior operational leader on shift, the Supervisor is accountable for plant performance, emergency response, workforce development, and maintaining a culture of safety, teamwork, and operational excellence.

Job Functions

Shift Supervisor (Rotating Shift)

  • Direct, plan and coordinates the activities and functions of on-shift operating personnel to ensure safe and reliable unit operations.
  • Daily Operational oversight of the facility’s electric production units consisting of Combined Cycle unit, water treatment facility, 2.4 miles 230KV high line and two Natural gas pressure station with 2.4 miles of gas pipeline.
  • Daily Operational oversight of the facilities 2.4 miles of gas pipeline operations to customer delivery point.
  • Ensure that units are operated within Federal, State and City regulations, and KEPC procedures.
  • Acts as initial Incident Commander during facility’s emergency response to environmental, fire, terrorist, and safety incidents.
  • Communicates real time operational events with the facility’s commercial team for NRG energy markets.
  • Analyze plant and equipment performance, and direct adjustments to ensure maximum efficiency and reliability.
  • Direct the removal and return to service of equipment, as requested, for maintenance purposes and in accordance with established LOTO, Safe Work Permit and Work Order procedures.
  • Evaluate operating procedures, revise, or recommend revisions depending upon scope of changes required.
  • Evaluate operating components within the station and recommend changes toward improving their functional efficiency.
  • Recommend the formulation of operating procedures as required to obtain maximum equipment reliability, economics, safety, and maximum manpower efficiency.
  • Administers the Company policies and WDE Generating Station Directives and Site-specific Operating Procedures
  • Ensure proper operator training is completed to maintain the highest skill level of operators.
  • Supervisors are expected to be proactive in supporting their crew and able to work as a team member.
  • Leadership Responsibilities as Shift Operations Supervisor:
  • Interacts with all plant personnel and contractors’ point of contact in the coordination of the facility’s short and long-term maintenance/ project and Outages.
  • Reviews daily corrective work orders and establishes priorities based on Safety, Operational and commercial impact and reports out daily to the WDE Leadership team.
  • Direct WDE personnel for the daily work plans and schedules PMs as well as routine CMMS emergent work orders to ensure safety of maintenance & operational activities. Coordinates activities by scheduling work assignments, setting priorities, and directing the work of subordinate employees.
  • Demonstrate the ability to evaluate and verify employee performance through the review of completed work assignments and work techniques.
  • Responsible for the development of LOTO procedures, and various work-related permits to be incorporated into the Work Authorization packages for the WDE team and contractors.
  • Develop and maintain the facility’s LOTO permit program including training of new personnel. Building and maintenance of computer based LOTO software and redline updates of P&IDs for use in work package isolation procedures.
  • Responsible for the updating and administration of Operations procedures with approval from Operation Manager and Plant Manager.
  • Assists Operations Manager with the development and administration of Operations training program.
  • Responsible for schedule coverage of the Rotating Shift to fill for vacations (operations manager approval) sick coverage, training coverage, and disciplinary actions for team members when applicable.
  • Assists in the development, trainings activities of operational Qualifications and Requalification as well as incorporating best practices and updates to qualifications (approval from Operations Manager)
  • Planning and implementation of outage isolation plans with Operations and Maintenance Coordinator as required to support work plans and Outage planning.
  • Supervisor must effectively communicate information to the Operations Manager, fellow supervisors, and subordinate operation and maintenance personnel, relative to the condition of the plant equipment and performance and provide suggestions for plant improvement.
  • Support Station Management with other activities/initiatives as required/requested.

Education and Experience

– An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered.

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or the physical sciences preferred, or minimum of 4 years in control room operations in lieu of education.
  • NJ Stationary Engineers License Red Seal o Applicants must have the ability to pass and obtain the NJ Stationary Engineers License as required and qualify as an Incident Commander.
  • Minimum of 4 years’ experience in Control Room and/or 5 years Field of operation of high-pressure boilers, steam turbine generators and all associated equipment.
  • Ability to supervise technical testing/calibration, repair, and installation duties in power plant location on all power plant electrical equipment and systems is required.

Work Environment

  • Must know the hazards involved and the safety precautions practiced in the operation and maintenance of power plant equipment and machinery and work within strict adherence to all safety practices and procedures.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g. hard hats, safety glasses, ear protection and other equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties.) o Additional required use of PPE include: SCBAs, respirators and various classes of chemical suits
  • Must have the ability to wear a respirator.
  • Includes working indoors and outdoors. o Occasionally required to work outdoors in inclement weather and confined spaces.
  • Exposed to high noise, heat and cold.
