Position Description
Northrop Grumman Defense Systems is seeking a Principal Systems Safety Engineer in Huntsville, AL, supporting the Sentinel (GBSD) program in the Strategic Deterrent Systems division.
You Will Get To Do
The Sentinel program offers opportunities to support use case development, requirements definition and allocation, functional decomposition, interface definition, verification & validation, and requirements traceability.
Specific Duties
- Collaborate with program IPT counterparts to develop supporting systems engineering and design artifacts.
- Work with technical teams and stakeholders to develop and mature architecture content of large program designs.
- Help develop and incorporate appropriate requirements for the system and ensure they are properly represented in the model.
- Contribute to system requirements development, management, and analysis.
- Develop unifying model techniques, procedures, and processes (for model development, tool integration, and team integration).
- Generate or review design artifacts to support System Safety analyses utilized in maturing weapons system design for safety and supporting flight test and flightworthiness of complex systems.
Basic Qualifications
- Must be a U.S. Citizen with an active U.S. Government Secret Clearance, current and within scope, with an investigation date within the last 6 years.
- Must have the ability to obtain and maintain Special Access Program (SAP) approval within a reasonable period of time.
- Experience using MIL-STD-882E or similar processes for hardware and/or software design development.
- At least 1 year’s experience with C/C++, Java, object-oriented design, or similar experience.
- Experience in software safety processes (MIL-STD-882E, AOP 51, 91-710, JSSSEH).
- Fundamental knowledge of system safety principles to develop safety documentation such as a System Safety Program Plan (SSPP), Preliminary Hazard Analysis (PHA), Functional Hazard Analysis (FHA), and System/Subsystem Hazard Analysis (SHA/SSHA).
- Familiarity with Agile.
Preferred Qualifications
- At least 2 years of System Safety Engineering experience conducting comprehensive system safety analyses in accordance with MIL-STD-882E (including PHA, FHA, SHA, and O&SHA).
- Execution of developed processes in Engineering and Manufacturing Development Phase.
- Software development or coding experience.
- At least 2 years of experience using DO-178 for design development.
- Experience developing in an Agile environment.
- Experience with requirements tools such as DOORS, Cameo, Agile software tools, JIRA, and/or Confluence.
- Experience in hardware/software integration.
- Scrum Master or Product Owner experience.
- Experience developing, reviewing, updating, and approving system safety artifacts and requirements.
- Model‑Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) experience.
- Experience developing missile flight systems software.
- Associate Safety Professional (ASP) or Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certification.
- Weapon system experience (e.g., Minuteman III) or similar military or industry experience.

This position’s standard work schedule is 9/80, allowing employees to work a nine-hour day Monday through Thursday and take every other Friday off.
Primary Level Salary Range: $108,800.00 - $163,200.00.
