Position
Northrop Grumman Defense Systems is seeking a Principal Systems Safety Engineer . This position is located in Roy, UT and supports the Sentinel program .
Responsibilities
- The System Safety Engineer is to influence design for meeting safety expectations and requirements for Northrop Grumman products. The successful candidate will independently analyze and recommend design features that meet safety criteria in system design to control or eliminate hazards.
- Participate in the design of products/systems, associated support equipment and facilities.
- Create functional specifications and establish safety requirements for assigned systems.
- Develop safety documents as required to support customer and test/operational range requirements and perform audits of operational areas, reporting on the effectiveness of the system safety program.
- Evaluate the interrelationship of system safety requirements with other design/development aspects to ensure a cost-effective program.
- Apply MIL-STD-882E, DO-178, DO-254, software development, design development, or similar systems engineering experience.
- Generate or review design artifacts to support System Safety analyses used in maturing weapons system design for safety and support flight test and flight worthiness of complex systems.
- This position may require relocation to Colorado Springs, Colorado, or Roy, Utah and may offer a competitive relocation package.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) discipline from an accredited university and 5 years of experience with a Bachelors, 3 years with a Masters, or 1 year with a Doctorate degree.
- Must have an active U.S. Government Secret security clearance at time of application, current and within scope, with the ability to obtain and maintain Special Access Program (SAP) approval within a reasonable period of time, as determined by the company to meet its business need.
- At least 1 year of using MIL-STD-882E to conduct Preliminary, Functional, Subsystem, System, Operating and Support Hazard Analysis.
- At least 1 year of experience with Safety Assessment Reports.
- At least 1 year of using DO-178 or DO-254 for design development.
- At least 1 year of experience with C/C++, Java, object oriented design or similar software development; strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
Preferred Qualifications
- At least 1 year of using MIL-STD-882E or similar processes for hardware and/or software design development.
- Lead a team in software safety processes in Engineering and Manufacturing Development Phase.
- Experience developing in an Agile environment.
- Model Based Systems Engineering experience.
- Experience developing missile flight systems software.
- Associate Safety Professional (ASP) / Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certificate.
- Weapon System experience (Minuteman III or similar military or industry experience).
- Active Top Secret clearance with investigation in the last 6 years.

This position’s standard work schedule is a 9/80. The 9/80 schedule allows employees who work a nine-hour day Monday through Thursday to take every other Friday off. This role may offer a competitive relocation assistance package.

Primary Level Salary Range: $98,400.00 - $147,600.00
The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.
Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
