Tax Senior Manager | Grand Rapids, MI | Reduced Hours Considered
The following information provides an overview of the skills, qualities, and qualifications needed for this role.
There are plenty of Tax Senior Manager jobs out there.
Most of them promise the same things. Great culture. Career progression. Competitive salary. A fantastic team.
Lovely. But what does any of that actually mean for you?
What if you could earn a Senior Manager salary without your entire life revolving around being a Senior Manager?
I'm working with a regional CPA firm, and they're open to something you don't see advertised very often at this level.
Reduced working hours.
Not everyone wants to work fewer hours, of course. But having the option? That's rather nice.
There's also flexible scheduling, some remote working, and a culture that's earned the firm a place on Fortune's 100 Best Companies to Work For list on multiple occasions.
And they've managed to do that while being a large accounting firm. Which, let's be fair, isn't always an easy combination.
Ideally, you've spent 10+ years working in tax, you're comfortable with business and individual clients, and you've reached the point where managing people and making decisions is just part of your day.
You'll need a CPA, EA.
But they're not looking for someone who wants to spend the next 10 years proving how committed they are by being the last person to leave the office.
They want someone who's good at what they do, can look after clients, develop people, and take ownership of their work.
I get it, when you're at this level, moving firms is a bit of a hassle.
You've built relationships. You know the partners. You know which clients are going to call you at 4:55pm on a Friday.
Starting somewhere new needs to be worth it.
That's why I think the flexibility here is worth a conversation. The chance to discuss reduced hours, work remotely for some of your required hours, and have a bit more say over how your working week looks isn't something every firm is willing to entertain.
There's also a strong benefits package, flexible time off, a 401(k), and a discretionary bonus for eligible staff.
You might decide you're better off staying exactly where you are.
Fair enough.
But if you've ever wondered whether you could have the same level of responsibility, interesting clients, and career opportunities with a working arrangement that suits you a little better, this is
probably worth 10 minutes of your time.
Here is the truth about applications.
Many people treat them like a checklist, where missing 1 item means instant rejection.
That is not how this works.
If this role interests you, apply. The apply button is not a commitment, it is the start of a conversation.

I start at 6am EST, so mornings work. After 5pm EST is fine too, though I may be slightly less lively.
Think you meet most but not all of the requirements? Apply anyway. The firms we work with want capable, interesting people, not cookie cutter accountants.
Do not overthink it. The worst outcome is a friendly conversation about your career. The best outcome is where it gets exciting.
