What if you could work on genuinely interesting tax clients, have the freedom to work remotely, and still feel like part of a team?
The experience expected from applicants, as well as additional skills and qualifications needed for this job are listed below.
That's what this opportunity offers.
I'm working with a boutique tax practice in Chicago that's grown considerably over the years, but has managed to hold onto the things that made people want to work there in the first place.
People stay. Quite a few have been there for over 15 years, which in public accounting probably deserves some sort of award.
They're now looking for an Experienced Tax Senior to join the team, and the good news is that they're not expecting you to arrive knowing absolutely everything.
So, what would you actually be working on?
The firm works with high net worth individuals, family offices, private equity and venture capital professionals. You'll get exposure to some really interesting and complex tax work, including:
- Individual tax returns (1040s), including complex HNW clients
- Partnerships (1065s) and corporate returns (1120s and 1120Ss)
- Trusts and estates (1041s)
- Tax research, planning and advisory work
- Some international tax exposure, depending on your experience
There's plenty of variety, and you'll often be looking at the bigger picture of a client's finances rather than preparing the same type of return day after day.
What are they looking for?
Ideally, you'll have a few years of experience in public accounting and feel confident preparing tax returns independently.
But here's something worth knowing.
You don't need to have worked with ultra high net worth clients before. You don't need international tax experience. And you don't need a CPA.
If you've worked in a smaller or mid sized CPA firm, have a good foundation in individual and business tax, and enjoy getting stuck into something new, they'd be very happy to consider you.
When I met the Managing Director, one of the things that stood out was how open they were to different backgrounds. They're much more interested in finding someone who's capable, curious and wants to develop than ticking every box on a job description.
And what about the hours and flexibility?
The team is predominantly remote, so there's flexibility to work from home or take a hybrid approach if you'd prefer to spend time in the office.
Busy season can reach around 60 hours during the peak periods, but that's not the expectation all year round.
You'll also have access to experienced people who are happy to share their knowledge, with opportunities to get involved in more advisory work as the firm continues to grow.
They're investing in new technology and AI tools too, so there's a real focus on making tax work more efficient and giving people more time to do the interesting stuff.
Ultimately, this could be a really good move if you're feeling a little stuck where you are.
Maybe you're preparing the same returns every year and want more variety. Maybe you'd like to work with more complex clients but haven't had the opportunity yet. Or perhaps you just want somewhere you can keep progressing without feeling like you need to sacrifice your entire life outside work.
You don't have to be actively job searching to have a conversation.
If this sounds interesting, apply and I'll be in touch to tell you more about the firm. We can have a quick, confidential chat first, and you can decide whether it's something worth exploring. xhqgsiq
If you'd rather reach out directly, you can send me a message here on LinkedIn by searching Lucy Weibel at Distinct North America .
And if you're unsure whether your experience is quite right, please don't rule yourself out. I'd much rather have a conversation than have you miss out on something that could be a really good fit.
