Senior Tax Advisor (CPA/EA)
Who We Are
Capita is an RIA firm growing at a fast pace. We focus on building long-lasting relationships with individuals, families, and business owners through comprehensive financial planning.
As part of our commitment to simplifying and strengthening the financial lives of our clients, we are expanding our in-house services to include tax strategies and preparation. This new role will play a foundational part in building that offering.
Job: Full-time: Monday–Friday, 9 am–5 pm
Location: Draper, UT
The Opportunity
This isn't a role where you'll be handed an established tax department and asked to simply follow the processes already in place. We're building the practice now. You'll work directly with clients on tax preparation, filing, and proactive tax planning while partnering with our financial advisors to make tax strategy part of the client's broader financial plan.
At the same time, you'll have a meaningful voice in how our tax practice develops. You'll help us improve workflows, establish processes and standards, identify the right technology and resources, and determine what the team needs as the practice grows.
You won't be expected to build it alone. You'll have the support and resources of an established financial planning firm around you, including operations, HR, technology, marketing, and an existing client base.
What You'll Do
Tax Preparation & Client Work
- Prepare and review federal and state individual income tax returns.
- Manage tax filings, extensions, estimates, and other compliance deadlines.
- Review client tax information and identify planning opportunities.
- Research tax questions and provide thoughtful recommendations.
- Communicate directly with clients regarding tax documents, filings, questions, and planning opportunities.
- Assist clients with IRS and state tax notices or other tax‑related correspondence.
Tax Planning
- Work alongside Capita's financial advisors to identify proactive tax‑planning opportunities.
- Help clients understand the tax implications of financial decisions throughout the year, not just during tax season.
- Support planning involving business ownership, investments, retirement, charitable giving, and other areas relevant to our clients.
- Help create a client experience where tax planning and financial planning work together rather than operating separately.
Help Us Build the Practice
Because this is a new function at Capita, you'll also have the opportunity to help shape it.
You partner with leadership and other teams to:
- Develop efficient tax preparation and review workflows.
- Help establish documentation, quality‑control standards, and best practices.
- Evaluate tax technology, software, and other resources.
- Help determine how information should flow between our tax and advisory teams.
- Identify opportunities to improve the client experience.
- Provide input into future staffing needs and the skills we should look for as the tax team grows.
- Help create a scalable foundation for the long‑term growth of Capita's tax services.
What We’re Looking For
- Active CPA license or Enrolled Agent (EA) credential required.
- Approximately 3–5 years of professional tax experience.
- Hands‑on experience preparing and filing individual income tax returns.
- Experience with business returns and taxation is strongly preferred.
- Strong understanding of federal and state individual income taxation.
- Interest in proactive tax planning, not solely tax compliance.
- Ability to communicate tax concepts clearly to clients and colleagues who may not have a tax background.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to manage deadlines, particularly during tax season.
- Comfortable working in an environment where some processes are still being developed.
- Interested in contributing ideas and helping build better systems rather than simply inheriting existing ones.
- Collaborative mindset and interest in working closely with financial advisors and other planning professionals.
Who Could Thrive Here
You may be a great fit if you've spent the last few years developing strong technical tax skills and are ready for something with a little more ownership.
Maybe you've worked in public accounting or another tax practice and enjoy the technical side of the work, but you'd like to have more influence over how things are done.
Maybe you enjoy preparing returns, but you're especially interested in the conversations that happen before the return—the planning decisions that can actually improve a client's financial situation.
Or maybe you're ready to help build something but don't necessarily want the risk and administrative responsibility that comes with starting your own firm.
At Capita, you'll have the opportunity to continue doing hands‑on tax work while helping shape a tax practice as it grows.
The safety and security of our employees and our clients is top priority. All offers of employment at Capita Financial are contingent upon a clear background check.
