Senior Systems EngineerThe Senior Systems Engineer position is a member of the Engineering group within the Technical Operations department of our client. The function of the role is to provide MS Windows systems administration and support for engineering projects, infrastructure and development.
The role will be focused on automation, building for scale, and fault tolerant systems. This role will also focus on technologies such as Puppet, VMWare, SAN/NAS, and other technologies. This is a highly challenging and progressive team environment with an opportunity to work alongside infrastructure engineers and architects.Duties and ResponsibilitiesPartners with the engineering, infrastructure, security and project management teams to help implement new systems that are scalable and highly resilientDevelops automation tools and processes to help scale operationsResponsible for disaster recovery testing and restoration of critical services during DR eventsProvides systems and services expertise and drive operational best practicesParticipates in capacity and scalability planningResearches, develops, and implements new technologies and practicesLeverages or builds appropriate technical tools to perform administration tasks, root-cause analysis and service restoration (such as back up, restore, failover, log interpretation, and performance monitoringDevelops and maintains positive and cooperative relationships, inside and outside of teams, interacting in a friendly, open, honest, and accepting mannerMentors junior systems administratorsEnsures 24/7 availability of the production servers and applications within a team environmentResolves Tier 3 incidents and requests. Requires on-call availability on team rotation outside of normal business hoursWorks to develop internal SOPs and Service handbooks for key systems and servicesPerforms other related duties as assignedRequired Qualifications and SkillsBachelor's Degree in Science or Engineering Discipline, or relevant experience5+ years of experience with supporting open-source infrastructure, systems administration, as well as hardware and software troubleshootingSolid understanding of Microsoft Windows systems administrationExperience with Puppet, Chef, or other configuration management toolsExperience with virtualization technologies such as VMware and HyperVExperience with DNS and DHCP technologiesExperience with PowerShellExperience with system performance monitoring & fine-tuningExperience with back up technologiesProven technical experience and a solid foundation in operating systemsStrong work ethic and have a natural tendency to take ownership of incidents & requestsGood team communication skills, with technical and non-technical colleaguesHighly Desired SkillsExperience with AWSExperience with Splunk or ELKExperience with HadoopExperience working with SAN/NAS storage environmentsExperience with JIRAExperience in programming languages (C#, Perl, Python a plus)ITIL certification or working knowledgeAdditional advanced certifications (i.e. Microsoft, VMWare, etc.)Experience with Linux system administration such as Red Hat / CentOS a plusExperience in Oracle and MS SQL environments a plusAdditional AbilitiesAttention to detail, and a drive to be successful; ability to work independently with minimal supervision or assistanceExperience writing detailed and clear procedures and documentations that are easy to followStrong problem solving skills, innovation, collaboration, analysis
