This role plays a critical part in ensuring product reliability, resolving complex technical issues, and driving continuous product improvement. This position requires strong technical troubleshooting capability, cross-functional collaboration, and the ability to translate field feedback into actionable product improvements.The Senior Sustaining Engineer acts as a technical escalation point for field and service teams, partnering closely with R&D, product management, quality, and customer support organizations to diagnose issues, implement corrective actions, and maintain product performance in the field.Job Responsibilities:Serve as Level 3 technical escalation for complex product and system issues impacting customers or field service teamsInvestigate product failures and field issues using structured root cause analysis methodologiesWork closely with R&D engineering teams to identify design-related issues and implement corrective actionsDrive Corrective and Preventive Actions (CAPA) to resolve recurring product or system issuesSupport engineering change processes including design updates, firmware revisions, and product improvementsAnalyze field data, service reports, and reliability trends to identify systemic product issuesDevelop technical documentation including troubleshooting guides, service bulletins, and engineering change recommendationsProvide technical guidance and mentoring to service engineers and junior engineering staffCollaborate with Quality, Manufacturing, and Product Management teams to improve product performance and serviceabilityParticipate in product lifecycle management activities including sustaining engineering reviews and reliability improvement initiativesCommunicate progress on resolutions to internal stakeholders and help with customer management as requiredContinuously evaluate processes for improvements in efficiency, quality, and safetyThis job description is not intended to be all-inclusive.
Responsibilities may evolve over time, and other related duties may be assigned to meet the ongoing needs of the company.Required Qualifications:Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 6+ years of relevant engineering experience supporting complex systems, instrumentation, or automation technologies; OR equivalent combination of education and experienceExperience supporting fielded products or sustaining engineering activitiesDemonstrated success diagnosing complex technical issues across hardware, software, and system integrationsProficiency in coding and scripting (e.g., Python, PowerShell, or similar) aimed at accelerating troubleshooting activities, identifying effective workarounds, and reducing engineering effort required for bug fixingStrong problem-solving skills using structured methodologies such as 8D, A3, or RCAExperience supporting complex instrumentation or automation systems in production environmentsAbility to interpret system architectures, control schematics, and communication protocolsExperience working with industrial communication protocols such as Modbus, Ethernet/IP, and OPC UAUnderstanding of regulated manufacturing environments (GMP, GAMP, FDA, Annex 1 preferred)Strong collaboration and communication skills across engineering and customer support teamsAbility to mentor junior engineers and guide technical problem-solving activitiesPreferred Qualifications:Experience working in regulated or controlled manufacturing environmentsWork Environment & Physical Requirements:This role primarily operates in an office/lab/manufacturing environment.
