Your Opportunity
Stantec is seeking qualified candidates for an experienced Senior Surface Mining Engineer for a Western US position. This role requires broad mining experience, including operations, engineering, consulting, and corporate office experience, together with proven technical competencies to support energy, industrial, and mining sectors. Projects focus on metals, aggregates, and industrial minerals.
Key Responsibilities
- Under the direction of Project Managers and/or Surface Mining Technical Supervisors
- Diverse background in energy, industrial and mining projects
- Use and direct others in mine planning software such as MineSight 3D (including MPSO), Deswik (including IS & LHS), Minemax, Vulcan, Carlson or similar packages
- Use Python programming/scripting language
- Direct others in efficiency and financial programs such as Excel, Tableau, Monte Carlo, or similar packages
- Provide mine engineering and financial expertise through strong operational and project-based experience
- Strong technical writing and communication skills demonstrated through reporting and presentation processes
- Assist in developing and expanding services with new and existing clients
- Manage tasks and develop staff as required
- Develop project budgets, determine scope, establish schedules, process paperwork, and interact with clients
- Engage in business development (e.g., develop proposals and identify project opportunities) with a focus on external relationships and key clients in the US
Capabilities and Credentials
- Background in data analytics is a plus
- Sign off as competent person for NV-4301, S-K 1300 or JORC reserves & resources reporting
- Subject matter expert in pit and phase optimization using Whittle, MPSO or NPVS software (Whittle preferred)
- Extensive experience with MineSight 3D, Deswik, or MineMax mine design software; creating optimized mine plans using MineSight MPSO or Deswik (IS Scheduler and LHS) is required
- Experience using MineMax is a plus
- Experience using Vulcan or Carlson considered
- Prior work in prefeasibility and feasibility project phases required
- Experience in mine valuation studies required
- Understanding of contracts and engineering delivery methods and pricing structures
- Attention to detail and strong QA/QC skills
- Understanding of project-related risks
- Strong technical writing and communication skills
- Existing network in mining, aggregates or industrial minerals is a plus
- Exceptional organizational, technical, leadership, written and oral communication skills
- Demonstrated innovation of mining process for past projects or roles
- Familiar with Mine Health and Safety Regulations
- Valid driver’s license required
Education and Experience
- Minimum of a B.S. in Mining, Civil, or Geotechnical Engineering
- Minimum of 10 to 15+ years of experience with project management, aggregate, or multidisciplinary energy, mining, or infrastructure projects
- Currently licensed or willing to pursue a P.Eng. (Professional Engineer) and/or QP (Qualified Person) within the first two years of employment
Pay Range
- Locations in CO, HI, IL, MD & Various CA, NJ, VA Areas — $117,800.00 - $176,800.00 Annually
Pay Transparency
In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible. Actual compensation for part‑time roles will be pro‑rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.
Benefits Summary

Temporary/casual employees have access to 401(k) plans, employee stock purchase program, and paid leave, in accordance with state and local law.
