The Opportunity

As a Senior Substation Structural Engineer you will have the opportunity to lead structural design engineering and analysis on substation scopes, collect and assimilate data, develop recommendations for equipment and materials, work within budget, project schedule, and quality requirements, and provide guidance to engineering team members. You will serve as a technical specialist and may supervise engineering staff on medium to high complexity projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Proactively provide guidance and direction on department design guides, standards, systems, applicable engineering codes and Black & Veatch policies
  • Assist in developing, maintaining, and updating engineering standards
  • Provide technical guidance to others regarding projects and disciplines
  • Apply knowledge and comply with Black & Veatch quality program, and support continuous improvement
  • Prepare complex engineering deliverables for multiple or mega projects, including research, equipment/material selection, calculations, and design of structures
  • Manage assigned budget, schedule, and quality requirements, and develop advanced engineering solutions to complex problems
  • Review lower-level engineering work or assignments
  • Establish work plans for projects and coordinate with internal/external team members on moderately complex and complex projects
  • Actively coordinate with other disciplines, define project schedules, and serve as a point of contact for client interests and drivers
  • Support knowledge management, mentoring, and business development activities
  • Assist with performance management, training, and resource allocation for small engineering groups

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active PE License
  • Advanced knowledge of Structural Engineering design principles and applicable design guides and standards
  • Intermediate to advanced structural steel and concrete experience using 3D analysis and design software such as RISA 3D, STAAD Pro, or equivalent
  • Foundation design experience using analysis and design software such as LPile, RISA Foundation, SP-Mats
  • Experience performing structural connection and miscellaneous calculations using MS Excel and/or Mathcad
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, team leadership, and problem‑solving ability
  • Client interaction experience with relationship‑building and business‑opportunity pursuit
  • Ability to think quickly on the job site and in front of customer personnel
  • Experience with the design of utility‑scale electrical substations, renewables, or related fields (plus)

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited program or equivalent experience
  • Minimum of 11 years related work experience
  • Active engineering registration or licensure to support engineer of record (EOR) requirements for BV projects in applicable countries
  • Ability to complete pre‑employment onboarding requirements (background check, drug screen, vehicle records)

Salary

$148,852 - $248,578
