Senior Substation Project Engineer (Utilities)

Join a leading California utility as a Senior Substation Project Engineer, leading the engineering and design of complex substation projects. This senior-level role requires strong technical expertise, independent problem-solving, and the ability to provide engineering leadership, mentorship, and technical direction to project teams.

Responsibilities

• Act as technical lead / project engineering lead for senior-level assignments
• Manage large, complex projects and perform engineering analyses, studies, and conceptual designs
• Lead, coach, and support technical employees and teams; may serve as an engineering mentor
• Assist in finalizing contract project specifications and evaluating contractor bids
• Provide support to land, permitting, and legal teams as needed
• Resolve complex engineering problems, including those requiring creative or non-standard approaches
• Independently plan and execute work under general direction to meet project objectives
• Collaborate with contractors, vendors, local public agencies, internal teams, and management to resolve issues and exchange information
• Provide technical direction to less experienced team members
• Lead substation engineering projects from design through execution
• Develop project scopes and job estimates
• Partner with design teams to create construction packages
• Perform design reviews and engineering studies

Minimum Qualifications

• 5-8+ years of experience in electrical engineering and design
• Must have strong substation engineering experience
• Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent)
• Strong communication skills (meetings, documentation, emails)
• Experience with engineering studies, job estimates, and design review
• Voltage experience (4kV through 500 kV)
• Design background (highly preferred but not required)
• Utility industry experience
• AutoCAD experience with applicable plugins
• Experience supporting large-scale, high-budget substation projects

Work Environment - This is a hybrid position, with work performed remotely and at an assigned work location in Oakland, West Sacramento, or Fresno, CA. 2 days minimum onsite is required, but can change based on business needs.

Travel Requirement – Position requires travel all throughout CA to cover service territories
