Your impact
The energy industry is undergoing rapid and dramatic changes, transforming the utility landscape to enhance safety, reliability and sustainability. Jacobs is expanding its Transmission & Distribution (T&D) operations in North America and is looking for a Senior Substation Physical Engineer in its Energy & Power Group to tackle the complexities of decarbonization and utility modernization to deliver a cleaner and more secure energy future.
Responsibilities
- Work closely with regional and global Transmission & Distribution (T&D) delivery teams to support utility/developer clients and operations teams as the energy transition portfolio expands.
- Interface with utility/developer clients on the development of Substation Physical design deliverables for utility upgrades including greenfield/brownfield projects, AIS/GIS substations, offshore wind facilities, and developer interconnection facilities.
- Provide engineering overview, expertise, and direction as an independent technical advisor representing Owner's interests on major programs and overhauls of T&D networks.
- Develop Substation Physical design deliverables fully and independently, ensuring projects are on time and within budget; may act as Owner’s Consultant/Owner’s Engineer (OC/OE).
- Mentor team members across North America and globally within Jacobs Global Integrated Delivery (GID).
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support sales/proposal preparation and the high-quality delivery of services to clients.
- Engage with professional societies (IEEE, PES, and similar) and participate in industry conferences and networking events to promote company services and stay updated on innovations (optional).
Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Advanced Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Power Engineering, or related discipline (Completion of Master’s degree accounts for 1 year of professional experience).
- Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in the United States or ability to obtain additional PE licenses if needed.
- Minimum 8 years of direct Substation Physical design experience with utility or consulting organization.
- Advanced knowledge of high voltage substation components (Transformers, Circuit Breakers, Disconnect Switches, Circuit Switchers, Capacitor Banks, Station Service Transformers, Reactors, Rigid Bus, GIS, Switchgear buildings, Control house, underground cable potheads, etc.).
- Experience in development of substation physical designs from conceptual through IFC drawings (GA, conduit/trench, grounding, BOM, conduit schedules, construction details, etc.).
- Familiarity with grounding system design and lighting and lightning protection for substations.
- Ability to perform substation AC/DC Station Service calculations and studies, voltage drop calculations.
- Experience in development/review of equipment vendor specifications (control house/switchgear building, construction/commissioning specifications).
- Demonstrated ability to perform QA/QC of design calculations, construction drawings, and specifications.
- Familiarity with CAD platforms such as Autodesk or Bentley products.
- Experience as an Owner’s representative is strongly preferred.
- Ability to scope projects, prepare task orders, review work, and verify owner’s compliance.
- Ability to perform field visits and provide engineering support during construction.
- Strong communication and technical writing skills; effective teamwork and presentation abilities.

The base salary range for this position is $151,400.00 to $200,000.00, with pay determined by location, skills, experience, and training.
