BG Power Advisors is recruiting on behalf of a nationally recognized engineering and construction firm with a long-established substation and power delivery practice. This is a direct-hire position based out of the client's Irvine, California office.
An active PE license is a hard requirement for this role. Applications without one will not be considered.
About the Role
This is a senior technical leadership position, not a scheduling or administrative one. You will serve as the engineering lead and deliverable owner on complex substation design and EPC projects, working alongside a dedicated Project Manager who handles the commercial and administrative side of delivery. The emphasis here is on design ownership and technical direction across disciplines.
What You'll Do
- Serve as responsible charge for large, complex substation design and EPC projects
- Lead multi-discipline teams of engineers and designers spanning physical, protection & control, and civil/structural
- Own design quality, budget, and schedule across all disciplines on assigned projects
- Prepare complex engineering deliverables and perform advanced engineering calculations
- Conduct research and develop equipment and material recommendations
- Establish and manage project work plans across multiple concurrent efforts
- Interface directly with investor-owned utility clients on scope, drivers, and project changes
- Review and mentor the work of junior and mid-level engineers
- Support proposal pursuits and engineering estimates
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (a structural engineering background may be considered for an otherwise exceptional fit)
- Active Professional Engineer (PE) license — required
- Minimum 8 years of substation engineering experience
- Experience delivering large investor-owned utility (IOU) projects for an engineering consulting or EPC firm
- Demonstrated proficiency in both substation physical design and protection & control
- Experience leading multidiscipline project teams with accountability for schedule and budget
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience managing EPC or design services substation and switchyard programs for U.S. investor-owned utilities
- Strong command of the full project lifecycle, layout design and optimization, relay protection & control, civil/structural design, and major substation equipment
- Working knowledge of procurement processes and contract administration
- Familiarity with the proposal process and developing engineering estimates
- Excellent communication skills and a genuine interest in building long-term client relationships
- Base salary up to $250,000 per year, depending on experience

Work Arrangement
