Who we are
At Clearstep, we believe healthcare should be easy. We build technology that helps patients find exactly the right care while helping health systems tackle their most pressing capacity challenges. As the most widely adopted self-service AI triage platform, we've reached patients in all 50 states and directed millions to the right care at the right time. Consider joining us if you want mission-oriented work, are driven to improve the healthcare experience, and want to build something that helps your own friends and family navigate healthcare. You'll find real opportunities for career growth and a direct hand in the success of a market leader in AI healthcare.
About this role
This role sits on the Engineering team and reports to the Engineering Manager. You will be handed whole projects, not just tasks: take a loosely defined problem, write the charter, break it into work, and get it launched cleanly. We are a small team, so you will work across our full stack, from Go services and React front ends to the AWS infrastructure they run on. Your day-to-day might include building a new EHR integration, hardening access controls and audit logging for PHI, standing up an isolated customer environment in a new region, reviewing a teammate's pull request, or leading the fix during a production incident.
This role carries a security and reliability bent. Health systems trust us with patient data, and you will be one of the engineers who makes that trust well placed.
Location: Fully remote within the United States, working US business hours. Travel at least once per quarter for onsites and conferences. We are unable to provide visa sponsorship for this role.
Core responsibilities
The ideal candidate will be able to do at least some of the following, with an interest in being exposed to the rest.
Product engineering
- Design, build, test, and ship features across the Clearstep stack, primarily Go on the backend and React on the front end
- Own projects end to end: write the technical charter, break work into well-scoped tasks, coordinate other engineers, and deliver on schedule
- Build and maintain integrations with EHRs and other healthcare systems using standards such as FHIR and HL7
- Write code that is well tested, clean, and well architected, and leave the codebase better than you found it rather than solving one-off problems
Infrastructure and DevOps
- Build, operate, and improve our AWS infrastructure, including containerized services (Docker, Kubernetes/EKS), managed databases, networking, and load balancing
- Stand up and maintain isolated, per-customer and in-region deployments, including outside the United States
- Improve CI/CD, observability, alerting, and runbooks so problems are caught before customers notice
- Serve on the on-call rotation as one of our production-access DevOps engineers, diagnose and resolve outages, and lead blameless post-incident reviews
Security and compliance
- Implement technical controls behind HIPAA and SOC 2: role-based and per-user access, identity and provisioning, encryption, key rotation, and immutable audit logging of PHI access for all any net new projects
- Triage and remediate vulnerabilities and dependency CVEs, and keep our security backlog under control
- Partner with compliance and customer-facing teams on security questionnaires, customer audits, and incident response testing
- Raise risks early, including calling a stop when something is not ready to launch
Technical leadership
- Mentor other engineers and give meaningful feedback through code review, task grooming, and acceptance testin
- Propose, evaluate, and implement new technologies and approaches, including how we use AI tools in our own engineering work
- Build broad knowledge of Clearstep's business domain so you can help define the problem, not just solve it
Requirements
- 5+ years of professional software engineering experience
- Solid expertise in at least one of our core languages, ideally Go, and working proficiency across the stack including React
- A track record of leading major projects from ambiguous requirements through launch
- Hands-on experience running production workloads on AWS with Docker and infrastructure as code
- Experience operating production systems: monitoring, debugging, incident response
- Working knowledge of application and cloud security practices, such as least-privilege access, secrets management, and audit logging
- The ability to pick up new technologies on your own, even when no one in the company has done it before
- Clear written and verbal communication, and comfort working directly with product, clinical, and customer teams
- Willing to use AI tools in day-to-day engineering work
- Able to develop on macOS
Nice to haves
- Healthcare industry experience, especially integrating with EMRs such as Epic, Cerner/Oracle Health, eClinicalWorks
- Experience with FHIR, HL7 v2, SMART on FHIR, or SSO/identity standards (OAuth 2.0, OIDC, SAML) and identity providers such as Keycloak
- Experience implementing HIPAA or SOC 2 technical controls, or working with compliance tooling such as Vanta
- Experience with Terraform, Kubernetes, and multi-region or single-tenant deployments
- Experience with conversational AI, LLM applications, or contact center and telephony platforms
- Experience at an early-stage startup
Strong generalist engineers without healthcare experience are encouraged to apply. We care more about how you learn and deliver than whether you have seen our exact problems before.
What success looks like
By 90 days: You have shipped production changes across the backend, front end, and infrastructure, joined the on-call rotation, and taken on your first project with support from the team.
By 6 months: You independently own projects from charter to launch, you are a go-to person for at least one area of the platform, and you have measurably improved our security or reliability posture.
By 12 months: Launches in your areas are routine and uneventful. You mentor other engineers, shape technical direction for infrastructure and security, and have deep expertise in at least one area of the Clearstep stack with broad knowledge of the business.
Compensation and benefits
- Base salary range of $150,000 to $200,000, commensurate with experience
- Stock compensation plan, so you will be a Clearstep co-owner
- Health insurance
- 401k with 4% match
- Flexible work schedule and unlimited PTO
- Monthly WFH and health stipends
- Strong emphasis on collaborative learning and career development
