Senior Software Engineer, Energy StorageSan Francisco, California, United StatesRedwood is localizing a global battery supply chain that seamlessly integrates recovery, reuse, and recycling — keeping critical minerals in circulation and driving the energy transition. Founded in 2017, we're delivering low-cost and large-scale energy storage and producing battery materials in the U.S. for the first time, all from batteries we already have.This position is on a team building the software platform that powers optimized control and market participation of battery energy storage systems (BESS) — software that runs both on site controllers and in the cloud. Our scope spans the full stack: compute infrastructure, telemetry, asset modeling, alerting, feature ingestion and storage for forecasting and optimization, simulation and operational control orchestration, and integration with energy markets. We're a lean team that holds ourselves to high standards in both the quality of what we build and the speed at which we build it. We value collaboration, trust, learning, and engineering excellence, and we genuinely enjoy building great things together.Responsibilities will include:Contribute to BESS data engineering — building and maintaining telemetry pipelines and stores, and feature ingestion and storage systems for forecasting and optimizationDesign, build, and maintain simulation and training infrastructure — platforms for running and orchestrating simulations at scaleDevelop and operate real-time forecast and optimization workflows, orchestrating pipelines that drive BESS operationsSupport energy market integration, including data ingestion and bid managementCollaborate across the full stack and across team boundaries to ensure the product system works well as a wholeWrite well-tested, well-monitored software and iteratively improve it over timeApply AI tools to accelerate development while maintaining high system design quality and code standardsDesired Qualifications:Strong software design instincts — thinks in systems, reasons from first principles, and understands the real-world challenges of building available, reliable, scalable, and secure distributed systemsComfortable using AI tools to move faster without letting them erode system design or code qualityExcellent collaborator — communicates clearly, listens well, and makes the people around them betterBias toward action — takes initiative, makes progress in ambiguous situations, and doesn't wait for perfect informationSystems thinker and owner — willing to think and collaborate across team boundaries to make sure the product works well as a wholeRigorous about quality — writes well-tested, well-monitored software and iterates on it over timeB.S. or advanced degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or another discipline, combined with 2-5 years of experience in software engineering.Experience with relevant technologies a plus: Kubernetes, Rust, Python, NATS, PostgreSQL/TimescaleDB, SQLiteA passion for sustainability and making the world a better place!In accordance with California pay transparency laws, the salary range for this position is listed below. Actual compensation may vary based on a variety of factors, including experience, education, and skills.California Pay Range:$150,000 - $237,500 USDThe position is full-time.

Compensation will be commensurate with experience.
