Senior Software Dev Engineer, AWS Core Network

Job ID: | Amazon Data Services, Inc.

AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. We support all AWS data centers and all of the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on. We work on the most challenging problems across thousands of variables impacting the supply chain. We’re seeking talented people who want to help.

You’ll join a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles. You’ll collaborate with people across AWS to deliver the highest standards for safety and security while providing seemingly infinite capacity at the lowest possible cost for our customers. You’ll experience an inclusive culture that welcomes bold ideas and empowers you to own them to completion.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) runs one of the largest networks in the world. We put services and algorithms in place to control traffic flow across the different fabrics of the Amazon network, taking static topological information as well as real‑time network inputs into account. By responding fast to network changes like scaling, maintenance, failure, security and other events, we lower the cost and overhead for customers while driving up performance, availability and reliability.

We empower people to take ownership of their realm and make a difference. We work backwards from customer needs, gather requirements, dive deep to choose technologies, design features and spin new services, deploy software across the globe and maintain services. We are nimble and agile, like a startup, innovating while collaborating with a smart group of people around you.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own multiple services and features, architecting them to scale with robust unit tests and metrics.
  • Understand customer needs by working with external and internal stakeholders and translating them to software requirements and execution plans.
  • Deliver quality features on‑time and on‑budget, executing against project plans and delivery commitments.
  • Lead team members to manage day‑to‑day development activities, participate in designs, review designs and code, and implement.
  • Mentor and lead junior engineers and guide them towards good software development techniques.
  • Maintain current technical knowledge to support rapidly changing technology, looking for new technologies and working with the team to bring them in.

A Day in the Life

You will architect, design, implement, test, and deploy new features to improve the scale and availability of the network.

You will look for continuous improvement to reduce the cost of operating the network.

You will exercise the highest bar for security in both code and operations.

You will find new ways to provide deeper insight on the health of our services and meet customer expectations on availability.

About the Team

We are a highly motivated team of software, system, and network developers who thrive on solving challenging problems and building large‑scale distributed software systems. We are looking for top engineers to join a talented, innovative team to drive new innovation in one of the largest data center networks in the world.

Basic Qualifications

  • 7+ years of non‑internship professional software development experience.
  • 7+ years of programming with at least one language.
  • 7+ years of leading design or architecture of new and existing systems, including design patterns, reliability and scalability.
  • Experience as a mentor, tech lead or lead an engineering team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ years of leading design or architecture of new and existing systems.
  • Master’s degree in computer science or equivalent.
  • Experience in networking, large‑scale distributed systems or a related field.
  • Experience programming with at least one modern language such as Python, Ruby, Golang, Java, C++, C#, Rust.
