Job Description
Resident Engineer (Highway / Interstate) – Chicago, IL. This role focuses on providing technical direction, mentoring staff, ensuring project success through effective supervision of field activities, maintaining client relationships, and adhering to budget and schedule requirements. You will lead and supervise a consultant team on roadway and bridge construction projects, contributing to the growth of the Chicago area and the broader transportation network.
Additional Duties and Responsibilities
- Project Delivery and Leadership: Responsible for safe, on‑time, on‑budget, high‑quality project delivery from Pre‑Construction through closeout, providing day‑to‑day leadership.
- Contract Compliance and Documentation: Verify and document contract compliance, interpret project drawings and specifications, and recommend actions to the client. Review and route deliverables such as submittals, RFIs, work plans, schedules, and meeting minutes.
- Coordination and Communication: Coordinate contractors’ work activities, chair internal and external project meetings, and actively participate in the invoice review process. Communicate project status to clients and stakeholders.
- Closeout and Reporting: Assist with project closeout activities including processing documentation, warranties, O&Ms, punch lists, and final change management and invoicing. Develop and maintain logs and reports for project reporting.
- Quality Assurance and Client Interaction: Conduct Quality Assurance inspections with construction contractors and support client interaction and coordination among internal and external stakeholders.
- Mitigating and Resolving Construction Issues: Proactively identify and address issues to prevent delays or rework, providing solutions that meet client expectations.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements
- BA/BS degree + 6 years of relevant experience or equivalent education and experience.
- Valid driver’s license required.
Preferred Qualifications
- BA/BS in Civil Engineering or a construction‑related field with 8+ years of relevant experience.
- Highway and Interstate construction experience.
- IDOT documentation of contract quantities.
- 7+ years DOT construction experience.
- Professional Engineer license.

To support a secure hiring process, all newly hired employees are required to attend an in‑person Day 1 onboarding at an AECOM office location as a condition of employment.
Compensation is based on education, qualifications, experience, and location. The range for this position is $110,000 to $155,000 per year.
