Senior Registered Engineer - Structural - Hydropower/Hydraulic Structures

Location: Austin, TX; Houston, TX; College Station, TX; San Antonio, TX; Dallas, TX (US). Company: Black & Veatch. This is an employee-owned company delivering infrastructure design, procurement, consulting and construction solutions.

As an employee-owned company, Black & Veatch emphasizes safety, collaboration and long-term value. The Senior Structural Engineer will support Hydropower and Hydraulic Structures design projects and may function as a senior-level engineer on multi-disciplinary teams.

Responsibilities

  • Execute complex structural analysis, perform calculations, and prepare sketches and drawings for the design of hydropower and hydraulic structures (e.g., powerhouses, dams, spillways, penstocks).
  • Perform site inspections of existing projects and develop remediation recommendations for aging infrastructure.
  • Serve as Subject Matter Expert during Comprehensive Assessments under the FERC Part 12d dam safety program, including dam safety evaluations, risk analysis, and structural stability assessments.
  • Collaborate with process and systems engineers on multi-disciplinary design projects requiring clear communication and planning.
  • Supervise Structural Engineers and Structural Technicians (US and overseas offices) in preparation of drawing packages, calculations and specifications; lead larger production teams as the responsible charge for projects.
  • Travel to client sites as needed to support project development (up to 20%).
  • Perform project administrative tasks such as design fee estimates, progress monitoring against budget and schedule, change management, and adherence to Black & Veatch Quality Control requirements.
  • Lead a team to execute complex projects with construction values up to $200M.
  • Provide guidance on department design guides, standards, systems, engineering codes and BV policies; assist in developing and maintaining engineering standards and offer technical guidance to others.
  • Support continuous improvement efforts and identify training needs; implement improvement strategies.
  • Influence and implement resource management for regional groups.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide guidance on department standards and engineering codes; maintain or develop standards and guides; mentor others on projects.
  • Ensure compliance with BV quality programs; promote continuous improvement, risk management and change management.
  • Prepare complex engineering deliverables for megaprojects; oversee data collection, analysis and material/equipment recommendations.
  • Develop and apply advanced engineering solutions; manage budgets, schedules and quality; assign tasks to team members and oversee multi-discipline activity.
  • Coordinate with internal and external team members on complex projects and define project schedules for single or multiple disciplines.
  • Identify key client interests and drivers; communicate these to the project team and adapt approaches accordingly.
  • Assist in business development or pursuit activities when appropriate.
  • Serve as a technical specialist in a broad or specialized field; support multiple projects with complex technical challenges; may interact with professional societies and provide leadership in a specialty area.
  • Mentor and develop lower- and mid-level professionals, with focus on career planning and development.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited program or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 11 years of related work experience.
  • Active engineering registration or licensure to support engineer of record (EOR) requirements; ability to support BV projects in applicable countries.
  • Ability to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements where applicable.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master of Engineering or Master of Science from an ABET-accredited Structural Engineering program.
  • Familiarity with IBC, ASCE 7, ACI 318, AISC Steel Construction Manual.
  • Proficiency with structural analysis software (e.g., RISA 3D, STAAD.Pro, ANSYS, SAP2000).
  • Experience with Army Corps of Engineers projects and UFC.
  • Proficiency with MS Office, Bluebeam, ProjectWise, AutoCAD and Revit.

Certifications

  • Active engineering registration or licensure to support engineer of record (EOR) requirements for BV projects where applicable.
