Job Description
We are looking to recruit a Senior or Principal Engineer to join our Traffic Signals Design team. There is flexibility around where this role can be based, with potential home offices in Bristol, Cardiff, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, London, Manchester or Southampton (hybrid working available).
As a Senior or Principal Traffic Signalling Engineer, you will lead day‑to‑day technical delivery of highway consultancy services to support clients through all stages of the project life‑cycle – from feasibility and concept design through to planning, detailed design, construction and post‑commissioning support.
This role will be client‑facing, with involvement in projects at both local and national levels.
Responsibilities
- Utilise technical expertise in traffic signals or traffic engineering to develop designs, supervise, train, check and approve work undertaken by junior colleagues.
- Manage traffic signal projects to ensure coordination and compatibility of multi‑disciplinary inputs on projects of varying scale, complexity and value.
- Liaise with clients, develop strong trusted relationships, proactively manage expectations and advise comprehensively.
- Undertake project technical lead and reviewer roles.
- Support others to maximise their personal contribution to project/team goals.
- Prepare fee proposals and manage budgets for individual projects.
- Be responsible for the development and delivery of discrete and overall project solutions.
- Lead and manage junior staff in the delivery of traffic signal design packages, including design drawings, standard construction details, specifications, controller configurations, MOVA datasets, FAT/SAT, etc.
- Ensure compliance with Health & Safety and Environmental Legislation and in‑house quality assurance standards/processes.
Qualifications
- Relevant knowledge and experience of traffic signal design at various stages of the project life cycle, including local transport modelling using software such as LinSig and controller configuration TR2500 forms. Specific experience in SCOOT and MOVA design, implementation and validation is advantageous.
- Demonstrable experience in leading a single or multiple design disciplines on relevant projects (e.g. road, public transport, active travel, public or private development).
- Experience of contract document preparation or contract administration / site supervision using Public Works Contracts.
- Ability to use, direct and check design outputs created in relevant software, including but not limited to Autodesk Civils 3D and KeySignals.
- Good communication, client/stakeholder management and interpersonal skills.
- Working toward or having achieved Chartered Civil Engineer or an Incorporated Engineer is advantageous.
- Thorough understanding and application of relevant design codes such as the Design Manual for Roads & Bridges, Manual for Streets, TSRGD, Local Authority design guidance, and ability to prepare drawings for contract documentation and technical approvals, including application of departures from standard.
- Experience of complying with Designer’s Duties under CDM regulations.
