Senior Principal System Engineer – Safety Lead
Location: Huntsville, Alabama. This role requires an active U.S. Secret security clearance and U.S. citizenship.
Responsibilities
- Create and update the system safety strategy and integrate it into the program schedule.
- Lead the safety program effort within the Integrated Master Schedule, coordinating with program and project managers.
- Manage the safety budget and tasking, including estimating and control of effort.
- Mentor junior safety engineers and remove barriers to team performance.
- Participate in engineering review boards and configuration control boards to assess design changes for safety impact.
- Establish a feedback loop with functional and program management for continuous safety improvement.
- Lead and coordinate System Safety Working Groups with Raytheon and customer representatives.
- Escalate risks and ensure corrective actions are followed through.
- Interpret system requirements, customer specifications and military standards to recommend compliance strategies.
- Collaborate with stakeholders across engineering disciplines (Systems, Software, Firmware, Electrical, Hardware, Environmental Safety & Health, Human Systems Interfaces, Test) to identify and mitigate risks.
- Manage safety interactions with suppliers and subcontractors.
- Innovate better safety solutions and promote a strong safety culture.
- Shape system safety and human system interfaces posture throughout the lifecycle: design, integration, test, flight test, production, field, returns.
Qualifications
- Typical requirement: STEM degree and at least 10 years of relevant experience.
- Expertise in MIL‑STD‑882E System Safety Program tasks (management – task series 100, analysis – series 200, evaluation – 300, verification – 400).
- Experience leading safety programs with multiple direct reports.
- Presentation and briefing skills to safety approval authorities and review boards.
- Strong collaboration skills with cross‑disciplinary engineering stakeholders.
- Ability to obtain and maintain an active U.S. Secret security clearance (U.S. citizenship required).
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience leading DoD System Safety Programs throughout the entire life cycle.
- Background in Software, Electrical, or Firmware Safety Engineering.
- Experience with Earned Value Management Systems (EVMS) and proposal development.
- Master’s Degree in STEM.
- Active and transferable Secret U.S. security clearance.
- Experience briefing at military safety review boards.
