Position Overview

The Physician Assistant (PA) in the Department of Medicine, Division of Hospital Medicine & Palliative Medicine, reports to Alpesh Amin, MD. The PA will provide comprehensive care in ambulatory or inpatient settings, coordinating multidisciplinary care, treatment, education, monitoring, and communication with patients and referring physicians. The role requires independence while working as part of a team and adherence to applicable policies and procedures.

Your Role on the Team

Functions (Scope of Practice)

  • Manage chronic stable medical conditions, routine care, acute or critical care, and perform medical and surgical procedures within the approved practice agreement.
  • Follow state statutes for licensing and approved privileges specific to each individual.
  • Provide patient care across age groups based on educational preparation and in all healthcare settings and affiliates.
  • Maintain standards of care, demonstrate self‑direction, and develop clinical responsibilities across all Health locations and affiliates.
  • Achieve credentialing and privilege approval prior to the first working day and remain accountable to supervising or collaborating physicians or the Administrative Manager.
  • Serve the adult population.

What It Takes to be Successful

  • Clear understanding of core internal medicine principles.
  • Knowledge of medical history elements and skill in history-taking.
  • Expertise and appropriate physical exam skills.
  • Experience with standard protocols for Hospital Medicine patients.
  • Effective working relationships across the program and UCI Health System.
  • Diplomacy and flexibility when interacting with physicians, nurses, other paramedical personnel, administrators, emergency and law enforcement officers.
  • Customer service skills appropriate to the role.
  • Clear communication of medical information to a broad range of people, both in person and over the telephone.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Writing skills to prepare clear medical reports, laboratory data and progress notes, maintaining a work pace appropriate to the workload.
  • Essential skill, knowledge and ability to perform assigned duties.
  • Training in the use of specialized medical equipment and procedures.
  • Adherence to privacy, confidentiality, and security policies related to Protected Health Information, and other sensitive data.
  • Licensure through the California Physician Assistant Board of the Medical Board of California.
  • Graduate from an accredited physician assistant training program (ARC‑PA).
  • Current BLS and ACLS certification.
  • National board certification (NCCPA) at the time of initial appointment.
  • Experience working with patients undergoing single and combined modality treatment plans.

Preferred

  • Multilingual ability.

  • Provide documentation of care delivered during the past 24 months, representative of the scope and complexity of requested privileges.
  • Obtain UCIMC Allied Health Professional Privileges before hire.
