Job Description
Administers anesthesia to patients undergoing surgical procedures in an operating room, or to patients undergoing diagnostic or therapeutic procedures outside the OR, under the supervision of a faculty member of the Department of Anesthesia & Perioperative Care at the UCSF Medical Center.
Responsibilities
- Determine patient condition prior to a procedure by reviewing medical records, assessing status, and conducting a thorough preoperative evaluation and physical exam.
- Plan for and administer anesthetics, including inhalation, intravenous, and regional techniques.
- Observe, monitor, and record vital signs and other intraoperative parameters.
- Insert invasive monitoring lines and interpret physiologic data.
- Maintain patients in a surgical anesthetic state.
- Administer fluids, blood products, and adjunct drugs as needed.
- Keep the surgeon and attending anesthesiologist informed of the patient’s condition.
- Take necessary remedial action to correct unacceptable changes in vital signs.
- Document anesthetic in accordance with legal requirements and record type of anesthetic used.
- Perform post‑operative follow‑up in the recovery room.
- Communicate with the attending anesthesia faculty member as needed before, during, and after surgery.
- When not assigned to a case, be available for work as directed by the daily anesthesia faculty physician.
- Work with physicians, surgeons, APPs, and other clinical and administrative staff to ensure efficient patient management, including histories, physicals, pre‑operative planning, and coordination with outside providers or PCPs.
- Provide patient and family education and engage in approved privileges after demonstrated competency through proctoring or FPPE.
- Answer clinically relevant patient medical advice calls or bedside communications.
- Interpret and act upon ordered tests, procedures, and radiographic studies.
- Assist in formulating and implementing protocols to improve clinical efficiency.
- Effectively communicate with patients or families in person, by telephone, or electronically.
- Adhere to all UCSF Health policies and procedures, including HIPAA, communication/privacy, code of conduct, and medical staff bylaws.
- Provide anesthesia care at all UCSF locations where anesthesia services are currently or will be required.
- Adapt to variable shift schedules that meet operational needs and patient care demands.
- Be prepared to orient and work across all UCSF Medical Center campuses.
Qualifications
- Minimum one (1) year of CRNA experience.
- Graduate from an accredited school of nursing and meet legal requirements to practice as a Registered Nurse in California.
- Graduate from a school of anesthesia accredited by the Council of Accreditation of Schools of Anesthesia; certified by the Council for Certification of Nurse Anesthetists.
- Possess knowledge and abilities essential to successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
- Flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center campuses.

License & Certifications
- Active, unrestricted Nurse Anesthetist licensure in California.
- Active, unrestricted Registered Nurse licensure in California.
- Current National Certification by the National Board of Certification and Recertification of Nurse Anesthetists.
- Current American Heart Association BLS certification for healthcare providers.
- Current American Heart Association ACLS certification.
- Current American Heart Association PALS certification.
- At least a master’s degree from an accredited Nurse Anesthetist program.
Additional Information
UCSF Medical Center requires all Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) to be credentialed through its Office of Medical Affairs and Governance (OMAG) to practice and function in their clinical role. Credentialing takes between 60‑90 days and must be completed prior to the first working day. APPs will be assigned an FPPE template of procedures for CRNAs but may add additional privileges on request with an explanation of the purpose.
