Position Overview
The Senior Manager, Membership & Operations will lead and grow The Moth’s membership and individual giving programs. This is an entrepreneurial role ideal for someone who is interested in cultivating, stewarding, and engaging members and maintaining and building on donor infrastructure and systems. The right candidate will balance strategy and data analytics with relationship building. They will bring a strong understanding of membership engagement, participation, and donor stewardship work together to support long-term membership and individual giving growth. This role also supports departmental operations and special projects as needed in partnership with the Vice President of Development.
This role reports to the Vice President of Development, and collaborates with Development, Marketing, and Production team members. They will partner with the Vice President of Development and executive leadership, including the CEO, to align fundraising strategy, organizational priorities, and high-level donor engagement opportunities, and will help supervise an intern. This role will also help strengthen pathways between membership engagement and philanthropic participation across The Moth’s live events, podcasts, workshops, and community programs.
Responsibilities
Individual Giving Strategy and Growth
- Lead and grow The Moth’s portfolio of members and individual donors.
- Direct The Moth’s membership program, manage revenue and expense tracking, with a focus on acquisition, retention, upgrades, and increasing the number and size of individual gifts from members and individual donors. Support the evolution of membership strategy with a focus on long-term relationship building, engagement, and donor participation.
- Collaborate closely with the Vice President of Development, the Special Events Officer, Marketing, and executive leadership on membership and individual giving strategy
- Direct The Moth’s Annual Appeal and special fundraising campaigns.
- Monitor, evaluate, and report on the success of discrete fundraising campaigns.
- Work with the Special Events Officer to deepen engagement and donor conversion among Moth event attendees.
- Leverage membership participation data and engagement behavior from live events and programming to inform membership acquisition, donor conversation pathways, and retention strategies. Use membership insights and participation trends to help deepen member engagement and strengthen long-term donor relationships.
Research, Relationship Mapping, and Database
- Serve as a strategic lead for Salesforce CRM utilization within the Development Department, supporting membership growth, donor engagement, segmentation, and campaign performance tracking.
- Responsible for the management and accuracy of Donor records, data collection, and financial activity.
- Conduct prospect research, relationship mapping, and wealth screening to identify and qualify new opportunities and prospects for membership and individual giving at all levels.
- Own Salesforce CRM strategy as a core system for membership growth, donor retention, segmentation, and campaign performance optimization.
- Employ both qualitative and quantitative data to inform strategy, track progress, and refine donor journeys.
- Evaluate donor revenue monthly and keep comprehensive records on donor movements, touchpoints, research, contact information, etc.
- Analyze member and donor behavior trends to identify opportunities for improved engagement, retention, and conversation across programs and campaigns.
- Keep updated on best practices, developing relationships with colleagues at organizations, and attending professional development seminars.
- Serve as a resource to the Development team on CRM usage, data hygiene, reporting, and systems best practices to support organization-wide fundraising effectiveness.
Donor Cultivation and Stewardship
- Manage and grow a portfolio of members, individual donors and prospects through proactive outreach, meetings, events, personalized communications, and stewardship activities.
- Work with the Special Events Officer to design engaging, and mission-driven events to increase member and donor engagement, retention, and annual giving.
- In collaboration with the Marketing department, create compelling donor communications, annual reports, and donor acknowledgments. Partner cross-functionally to support thoughtful membership engagement and participation strategies that deepen connection to The Moth over time.
- Interest in initiating a dedicated planned giving strategy.
Development Team Support and Cross-Functional Work
- Provide high-level operational and strategic support to the Vice President of Development, helping to manage priorities, prepare materials, coordinate cross-team initiatives, and ensure follow-through on key departmental initiatives.
- Act as a flexible team member supporting departmental planning, problem-solving, and execution across fundraising functions as needed.
Qualifications
- 5–7 years of experience in membership, development operations, and individual giving or related fundraising roles.
- Demonstrated success building or expanding membership and individual giving programs. Experience leveraging membership engagement, donor data, or participation insights to support fundraising growth and retention strategies are strongly preferred.
- Strong track record in donor cultivation, stewardship, and relationship-building.
- Experience with prospect research, wealth screening tools, and relationship mapping.
- High attention to detail with strong organizational and project management abilities.
- Able to exercise a high level of discretion and professional judgment, and to interact authentically and confidently with donors and prospects.
- Comfortable working in a department and organization where responsiveness, collaboration, adaptability and multitasking are essential.
- Proficiency with fundraising databases and project management systems. SalesForce, Marketing Cloud, and Air Table strongly preferred.
- Experience working within a mid-sized development team, adapting to evolving departmental and organizational priorities strongly preferred.
- Flexible, creative, with a genuine interest in The Moth and its mission.
Compensation:
