Overview
An HVAC Mechanical Engineer designs, analyzes, and optimizes heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems for buildings, focusing on comfort, air quality, and energy efficiency by performing load calculations, selecting equipment, creating drawings, and ensuring code compliance, often collaborating with architects and overseeing installation/testing, with key duties including system modeling, energy analysis, and troubleshooting.
Key Responsibilities
- Design & Analysis: Develop HVAC system layouts, perform heating/cooling load calculations, size equipment (chillers, AHUs, ductwork), and create schematics using CAD/BIM.
- Optimization & Efficiency: Model energy usage, implement sustainable designs, and ensure systems meet performance, cost, and environmental goals.
- Collaboration: Work with architects, project managers, and contractors to integrate HVAC systems seamlessly into building designs.
- Project Management: Oversee system installation, commissioning, and testing; troubleshoot issues; and prepare technical documentation.
- Compliance: Ensure adherence to building codes, safety standards, and energy regulations.
- Strong understanding of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer.
- Proficiency in CAD/BIM software and energy modeling tools.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Ability to manage projects, budgets, and timelines.
Typical Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
- Experience with HVAC design, potentially including EIT/PE certification.
