Senior Mechanical Engineer – Lead Our Mechanical Team

HVAC / Plumbing / Fire Protection · Brooklyn, NY

Location: Brooklyn, NY (on-site) Type: Full-time Reports to: Chief Operations Officer / Engineer of Record Salary: $115,000 – $135,000

The Opportunity

If you are already doing senior-level work but the title, the team, and the ownership have not caught up to you — this is that step.

You know the situation. You are the one the PM comes to when the job is complicated. You are already checking other people's drawings. But at a firm with a full org chart above you, the leadership seat is not opening any time soon.

We are opening it now.

JRS Consulting / NYC Engineering D.P.C. is a growing Brooklyn-based MEP engineering and electrical consulting firm serving commercial, residential, and industrial projects across New York City and New Jersey. Our project volume and client base are expanding, and we are building the senior bench to take the firm to its next stage.

This is a growth hire. You will lead our mechanical team, own our most complex work, and have real influence over how we operate and what we take on — with substantial opportunity ahead as the firm grows. We are not filling a seat. We are looking for someone who wants to build something here for the long term.

What You Will Own

  • Lead the team
    • Lead, mentor, and manage our engineers and drafting staff
    • Direct the drafting team's work, check their drawings, and hold the standard
    • Assign work, set priorities, and manage deliverable schedules across concurrent projects
    • Develop your team's technical capability through direct coaching
  • Own the hard engineering
    • Direct complex mechanical, plumbing, and fire protection design across new construction, gut renovation, and alteration projects
    • Develop and check load calculations, ventilation and energy code compliance, plumbing fixture and riser sizing, gas load calculations, and sprinkler/standpipe hydraulic design
    • Resolve the non-standard problems that require real judgment, not standard details
    • Provide design direction on system selection, equipment sizing, and cross-discipline coordination
  • Own the quality
    • Serve as the project QC authority: review drawings, specifications, and calculations before they go out
    • Select project equipment and review contractor submittals, shop drawings, and RFIs against design intent
    • Maintain drawing standards and consistency across disciplines and project teams
    • Verify compliance with NYC Construction Codes (Mechanical, Plumbing, Fuel Gas, Fire), NYCECC, and applicable NFPA standards
  • Own the client relationship
    • Act as the senior technical contact for owners, architects, expeditors, contractors, and utilities
    • Attend project meetings and site visits; communicate design intent, constraints, and options clearly
    • Prepare and respond to NYC DOB objections — revised drawings, calculations, narratives, and supporting letters
    • Coordinate with the Engineer of Record on filings, sealed documents, and special inspections

You will carry several active projects at once and oversee the drafting team, so multitasking across concurrent deadlines without losing details is essential.

What We Need

  • A P.E. license is not required for this role, Engineer of Record seals all filed documents. However, applicants should have senior-level design experience and be capable of leading complex projects independently. This role owns the design, the team, and the quality of the work.
  • Formal management experience is welcome but not required. We are equally interested in engineers who have been the technical lead on projects, reviewed others’ work, and naturally taken on leadership responsibilities.
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field
  • 5–7+ years of hands‑on design experience — 7+ preferred
  • Real project experience across HVAC, plumbing, and sprinkler / fire protection. All three matter to us; if you are deep in two and solid in the third, we want to talk
  • High proficiency in AutoCAD and Revit — you can produce and check contract documents yourself
  • Working knowledge of NYC Construction Codes, NYCECC, and NFPA standards; NJ code experience a plus
  • Experience filing with NYC DOB and responding to plan examiner objections
  • Experience selecting equipment and reviewing submittals and shop drawings
  • Proficiency with load calculation software (Trace, HAP, or equivalent) and hydraulic calculation tools
  • Strong attention to detail — accuracy, drawing consistency, and code compliance are core to this role
  • Clear written and verbal communication for direct client interaction
  • Nice to have: DEP, FDNY, Con Edison, or National Grid submissions · multifamily, mixed-use, or light industrial experience · heat pump / electrification retrofits and Local Law 97 · construction administration

Who Thrives Here

  • Sharp — grasps unfamiliar technical problems quickly and reasons through them without being walked through
  • Energetic — brings momentum to a busy multi-project workload and keeps a team moving
  • Quick on their feet — turns around calculations, objection responses, and client questions fast without sacrificing accuracy
  • A genuine multitasker — juggles several live projects and a drafting team without dropping threads
  • Self‑motivated and self‑directed — brings their own drive, sees what a project needs, and moves on it
  • Decisive under pressure — makes engineering judgment calls and stands behind them

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary: $115,000 – $135,000 per year, commensurate with experience
  • Health insurance
  • 401(k) retirement plan with company match
  • Paid time off and paid holidays
  • Direct ownership of projects from concept through sign-off
  • A path to expanded leadership as the firm grows
