Senior Materials and Processes Engineer – Crew Habitation, Lunar Permanence

Onsite Full Time Engineering

  • Provide broad support for aerospace-grade materials and processes, including aluminum, steel, inconel, copper, bronze, composites, forming, extrusion, plating, coating, friction welding, brazing, anodization, passivation, and solid and sandwich laminates
  • Own material and process requirement implementation and verification for crew-facing hardware in a pressurized space crew module
  • Lead and coordinate material characterization and qualification efforts for crew-facing hardware
  • Systematically review production drawings for large, complex assemblies and document reviews against established requirements
  • Provide M&P signatory release of engineering drawings for parts and assemblies
  • Lead and coordinate internal and external M&P efforts, including specifications, supplier qualification, First Article Inspection, mechanical testing, and customer-facing updates
  • Develop internal engineering and quality processes to standardize and accelerate material evaluation, implementation, and qualification
  • Work with cross-functional teams within the Lunar organization and other business units

Requirements

  • Minimum M.S. degree in Aerospace, Material Science, Mechanical, Manufacturing, Chemical Engineering, or related field
  • 8+ years of demonstrated M&P Engineering experience on a crewed space program
  • In-depth knowledge of NASA cleanliness, contamination, toxicity, and life support system materials requirements, standards, characterization methods, and industry best practices
  • Strong familiarity with NASA-STD-6001, toxicological, fungal, and microbial assessments, and related NASA requirements for crew-facing hardware in a pressurized space crew module
  • Strong familiarity with fluid compatibility of materials, particularly for water systems and corrosion prevention and control
  • Experience developing and executing test plans for analysis and qualification of components, materials, and processes
  • Knowledge of industry standards for material data analysis, including MMPDS, MAPTIS, and CMH-17
  • Experience organizing and managing materials and process-related data in a company-accessible database
  • Ability to travel to other Blue Origin and vendor sites
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident/current Green Card holder, or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum
  • Desired: ability to assess soft goods, foams, adhesives, coatings, flammability risks, and toxic atmosphere, with working knowledge of high oxygen concentration environments
  • Desired: Ph.D. in Aerospace, Material Science, Mechanical, Manufacturing, Chemical Engineering, or related field
  • Desired: experience owning cleanliness and contamination control requirements for crewed space vehicles
