nThe Senior Mainframe Engineer plays a critical role within our managed services engineering team, providing technical leadership and driving operational excellence across customer environments. This position focuses on developing standards, optimizing processes, and ensuring consistent, reliable delivery of mainframe services. The ideal candidate will combine deep technical expertise with strategic vision to modernize z/OS environments and lead initiatives that enhance efficiency and scalability.
nAbout This Role:
nKey Responsibilities
nServe as a technical leader, guiding best practices and mentoring team members on z/OS operating system upgrade optimization
nDesign and implement standardized approaches for z/OS upgrades and mass maintenance to ensure repeatable, high-quality outcomes
nLead efforts to optimize system performance, streamline processes, and reduce operational complexity
nOversee installation, configuration, and maintenance of IBM and ISV software products, ensuring alignment with enterprise standards
nCollaborate with cross-functional teams to plan and execute operating system upgrades with minimal business impact
nDevelop and maintain comprehensive technical documentationand templates for operating system rollouts
nDrive adoption of new technologies and capabilities (e.g., Sysplex enhancements, automation frameworks) to support strategic objectives
nAct as the subject matter expert (SME) for mainframe infrastructure projects, providing technical direction and governance
nProvide advanced troubleshooting and resolution for escalated incidents beyond Level 1 support
nParticipate in after-hours and weekend support as required
nRequired Expertise
nProven experience in z/OS operating system upgrades, mass maintenance deployment, and software installation
nIn-depth knowledge of z/OS components: JES2, HCD/IODF, SMP/E, WLM, OMVS/USS, SMF/RMF, ASM, GRS, SDSF, TSO and RACF
nStrong understanding of communication protocols (VTAM, TCP/IP) and LPAR configuration via HMC
nExpertise in storage management (SMS, HSM, DFDSS, VSAM, IDCAMS, ICF Catalogs)
nMinimum 10 years of experience as a Mainframe Senior Systems Engineer
nPreferred Skills
nFamiliarity with mainframe automation and monitoring tools
nExperience with major subsystems (CICS TS, IMS, DB2 and IBM MQ)
nKnowledge of tape library configuration, printer setup, and TCP/IP server configuration
nUnderstanding of IBM Z hardware architecture
