SENIOR GRAPHIC DESIGNER

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
Creative and technical position responsible for planning, developing, and designing public information materials. General supervision is received from an immediate supervisor, with direct supervision over assigned staff.
Differs from Graphic Designer due to more difficult and complex assignments and greater independence. Performs related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Supervises designers and print shop staff, delegates assignments, and ensures timely completion.
Oversees design, layout, and production of social media graphics, publications, brochures, flyers, signage, banners, and other City materials.
Maintains and operates the City print shop and recommends equipment and technology upgrades.
Collaborates with City departments, including the Mayor's Office, YPS, Police, Fire, Parks, and Public Works, to produce materials.
Ensures branding compliance and consistency.
Manages multiple projects, meets deadlines, and adjusts priorities. Maintains knowledge of design technology and production.
Uses Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop to create designs.
Prepares prepress files, ensures accuracy, and provides final approvals.
Coordinates with outside vendors and printers.
Develops multimedia content.
Uses Microsoft Office, including Word and PowerPoint.
Assists with photography projects, including drone photography.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Knowledge of graphic design, typography, printing, and illustration.
Thorough knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, including InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop.
Working knowledge of digital design, Microsoft Office, and large-format printing.
Ability to plan, supervise, coordinate, and manage details.
Ability to use desktop publishing and graphic-design software.
Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and troubleshoot issues.
Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
Creativity, resourcefulness, tact, and courtesy.
Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: EITHER
A) Associate's Degree in Graphic Art, Commercial Art, or a related art curriculum, and two (2) years of experience in graphic design or as a commercial artist; or
B) High school graduation or High School Equivalency Diploma, and four (4) years of related experience; or
C) Equivalent combination of education, training, and experience within the limits of Options A and B.
NOTE: Degrees must be awarded by an institution accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Foreign degrees require independent equivalency verification. Acceptable evaluation companies are listed by the New York State Department of Civil Service. Applicants are responsible for evaluation fees.
