Job Overview
Senior Engineer – Department: DPW - Engineering. Employment Status: UFCW, Non-Exempt; Full‑Time (40 Hours). Salary: Grade A12, Step 01 – $30.49/Hour to $39.37/Hour. Schedule: Mon‑Fri 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM. Certifications/Licenses Required: Massachusetts Class D Driver’s License.
Responsibilities
- Perform professional engineering and administrative duties.
- Manage citywide infrastructure construction programs, coordinating with contractors, developers, city/state/federal departments, and private utilities.
- Determine if construction workmanship is within specification tolerance by inspecting contract plans and specifications for projects such as highways, buildings, sewers, and drains.
- Design in‑house projects for highways, site‑work, utilities, and other infrastructure improvements, producing plans, specifications, and cost estimates in accordance with sound engineering principles and city/state standards.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or closely related discipline – required – with at least three years of progressive responsibility in public works operation, construction, engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum of an Associate’s Degree in Science and at least five years of experience in engineering and design of roads and stormwater systems (may be considered).
- Massachusetts Class D Driver’s License.
- Strong writing skills.
- Knowledge of basic mathematics, elementary algebra, and plane geometry.
- Knowledge of intermediate to advanced engineering field surveying principles.
- Knowledge of equipment used in engineering field surveying.
- Advanced knowledge of terminology, symbols, codes, and standard abbreviations used in civil engineering.
- Ability to code and arrange data according to given order or procedure.
- Ability to read, interpret, and apply technical literature, laws, regulations, pamphlets, blueprints, plot plans, topographic maps, etc.
- Ability to use appropriate formulae for determining exact locations and measurements.
- Ability to interpret and apply written instructions.
- Knowledge of OSHA regulations and requirements.
- Demonstrated working knowledge of federal and state regulations.
- Knowledge of public bidding rules; preparation of bid packages including product specifications and bid review.
- Demonstrated working knowledge of AutoCAD Civil 3D, HydroCAD, GIS, PermitEyes, Microsoft Word, and Excel.
- Knowledge of metal detectors, measuring tape, survey equipment, and drafting equipment and techniques.
