We are looking for a Senior Electrical Test Engineer to join our team in Dayton.
Role Summary
Under direct or general supervision, you will be responsible for complex assignments involving planning, investigations, surveys, equipment, and operating problem resolution. You will use extensive knowledge of engineering principles to devise new approaches, coordinate detailed phases of major projects, and oversee and manage complex projects. You will also engage in project management, employee development, and training, providing independent engineering judgments and technical leadership.
Responsibilities
- Technician training and development
- Assess employee skill levels across all job functions and identify development opportunities.
- Set up training for all equipment and testing related to substation entry, transformers, breakers, reclosers, CCVT’s, RTU’s, capacitors, regulators, MOABS, batteries, and all protective relaying systems.
- Prepare training for test equipment/processes such as relay testing/commissioning, power factor testing, recloser testing, contact resistance testing, phasing, ground grid testing, DGA/oil sampling, meggering, hi-pot testing, carrier/TTR testing, soil resistivity testing, SFRA, and trip testing.
- Work independently in the lab with employees as needed.
- Provide training or support for the Test Department supervision or other departments as required.
- Provide on‑site oversight for projects, ensuring high quality work, proper procedures, and policies are followed while offering technical and supervisory support.
- Provide field storm support for the distribution and transmission system, including substation response, scouting outage/damage calls, and managing circuit restoration.
- Offer on‑site technical and supervisory support for severe emergencies, outages, and other extenuating circumstances (mobile installation, transformer lockouts, equipment failures, etc.).
- Offer on‑site technical support for mobile substation installs, trip testing, transformer testing, troubleshooting, test equipment troubleshooting, or any other technical support need.
- Introduce, promote, and encourage Human Performance Concepts and Practices.
- Develop guides and training aids for all Test Department related equipment and processes.
- Evaluate new equipment or procedures to improve safety, efficiency, and productivity; monitor current industry practices, trends, and procedures.
- Provide on‑site technical support and consultation for substation projects completed by contractors; periodically visit job sites to ensure contractors follow best practices and standards.
- Assist with analyzing all test results and data; prioritize results and make recommendations on next steps.
- Determine timeframes for repairs or replacements for non‑critical or emergency equipment conditions.
- Recommend long‑term maintenance plans for aging or deteriorated equipment; identify trends and equipment deterioration.
- Evaluate equipment status and remaining life, suggesting and recommending replacement or repair.
- Assist with transformer factory field visits, quality control inspections, and factory test witnessing.
- Assist with the progression testing of employees in the Test Department.
- Serve as a professional representative of the Company, as assigned.
- Direct the preparation of applicable computer software.
Qualifications
- Four‑Year College Degree (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
- Seven to ten years of experience in electrical engineering.
- Union experience and proven project management skills with the ability to lead and work in a team environment.
- Professional Engineering License preferred or Subject‑Matter Expertise.
