Senior-Level Electrical Engineer / Power Systems SmeKimley-Horn's Greenwood Village, Colorado (CO) office is seeking a senior-level electrical engineer / power systems subject matter expert with deep expertise in advanced power system studies, electromagnetic transient analysis, and dynamic simulations to help lead and grow our power delivery capabilities in Denver, CO. This role is geared toward a proven technical leader who can own complex utility-scale generation, battery energy storage system, substation, data center, and large-load studies; provide trusted guidance to clients and internal teams; and help shape best practices around transient and dynamic system performance.ResponsibilitiesLead advanced electromagnetic transient simulations in PSCAD for renewable generation, battery energy storage system, hybrid systems, and large-load interconnection projectsDirect and review dynamic (RMS) studies using PSSE or equivalent tools, including model validation, scenario development, and results interpretationProvide technical leadership on complex study areas, including:Temporary overvoltages (TOV)Transient recovery voltage (TRV)Switching transients and fault responseLoad rejection and load ramp eventsInterpret, apply, and advise on applicable IEEE, NERC, utility, and regional interconnection requirementsDevelop and oversee high-quality technical reports, study methodologies, assumptions, conclusions, and recommendations that can stand up to utility, client, and regulatory reviewServe as a senior technical resource across multidisciplinary project teams, mentoring engineers and helping elevate the overall power systems study practiceQualifications10+ years of progressive electrical engineering experience with a strong focus on power system studies, advanced simulations, or grid integrationProfessional engineering (P.E.) license preferred; ability to serve as a senior technical reviewer and trusted advisor to clients and project teamsBachelor's degree in electrical engineering (master's degree preferred)Expert-level understanding of:Transient and dynamic system behaviorProtection coordination and system response during faultsSignificant experience with interconnection, grid compliance, and utility-facing study requirementsAdvanced proficiency in:PSCADPSSEAbility to lead through influence, collaborate across disciplines, mentor junior and mid-level engineers, and help build scalable technical processesExperience with additional tools such as ETAP, SKM, or EasyPowerPreferred senior-level experience:Demonstrated experience leading studies for hybrid systems involving battery energy storage system, renewable generation, and large load integrationStrong exposure to data center, industrial load, or other high-demand load modeling and interconnection challengesExperience with additional tools such as ETAP, SKM, or EasyPowerWorking knowledge and practical application of:IEEE 2800IEEE 1547Utility-specific interconnection requirements (e.g., ERCOT, WECC, BPA)Salary Range:$130,000 - $200,000Eligible for performance based bonus compensationWhy Kimley-Horn?At Kimley-Horn, we do things differently.
