Senior Electrical EngineerAalo Atomics is pioneering a new era in clean energy with factory-fabricated microreactors designed to deliver affordable, scalable, and reliable nuclear power. Our mission is to make nuclear energy globally accessible, starting with the Aalo-1, a 10 MWe reactor leveraging cutting-edge safety, modularity, and efficiency. Based in Austin, TX, we're rapidly growing as we work to deploy the world's first fleet of advanced microreactors. Join us and help revolutionize energy for a sustainable future. As a Senior Electrical Engineer at Aalo Atomics, you will own the electrical and instrumentation systems on our reactor from architecture through first-of-kind build and beyond.
You will design embedded hardware and firmware, build control panels, terminate instrumentation loops, commission systems, and iterate - all hands-on in our facility. This is a senior technical leadership role responsible for defining how we design, build, and scale reactor electrical systems from prototype to production.Responsibilities:Own the full lifecycle of electrical and instrumentation systems: architecture, detailed design, build, test, commissioning, and iterationDrive the architecture, development, and build-out of Aalo's embedded hardware and firmware capabilities - defining the path from off-the-shelf I&C toward fully proprietary embedded systemsDesign and build control systems for reactor and balance-of-plant components including sensors, actuators, signal conditioning, and PLCs/DCS hardwareDevelop and maintain electrical schematics, loop diagrams, P&IDs, cable schedules, and panel layouts in CAD/EPLAN or equivalentSpecify, procure, and qualify electrical components and instrumentation; own the BOM and supplier relationshipsCollaborate closely with mechanical, thermal, and nuclear engineering teams to integrate electrical systems into the overall reactor designMentor junior electrical engineers and technicians; set technical standards for the electrical teamQuestion requirementsBasic Qualifications:Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline5+ years of hands-on experience designing and building electrical systems, control panels, or instrumentation - not just simulating or specifying themDemonstrated experience driving embedded hardware and firmware architecture, including custom PCB design, microcontroller selection, real-time firmware, and hardware/software interface definitionAbility to size electrical wiring to meet needs of systems and components in compliance with NFPA 70 (NEC)Experience with decentralized electronic hardware (such as I/O modules, power supplies, sensors, and controllers)Strong working knowledge of industrial instrumentation: thermocouples, RTDs, pressure transducers, flow meters, level sensorsProficiency with electrical design tools (NX Electrical, SolidWorks Electrical, EPLAN, AutoCAD Electrical, or equivalent) and ability to produce production-ready drawingsExperience working with cybersecurity for control systemsAbility to use a variety of network protocols (Modbus, EtherCAT, Ethernet/IP, OPC-UA)Track record of independently driving electrical hardware through design, build, and commissioning milestonesPreferred Experience:Experience in nuclear, aerospace, oil & gas, or other high-consequence industries with strict quality and documentation requirementsHands-on experience building and commissioning first-of-kind electrical systems in a fast-moving R&D or startup environmentAbility to use electrical test equipment including multimeters, oscilloscopes, data loggers, Hipot testers, and LCR metersFamiliarity with IEEE, ISA, NEC, and/or nuclear I&C standards (IEEE 603, ISA-84, etc.)Experience owning production schedules and driving hardware through manufacturing milestonesPrior experience in a vertically integrated hardware company where engineers build what they designExperience scaling electrical systems from prototype to repeatable production buildsExperience building systems for industrial safety, following NFPA79Hands-on experience designing, shielding, and testing electronics for EMI/EMC compliance and/or operation in radiation, high-temperature, or otherwise harsh environmentsExperience working with AI for writing code and documentationPhysical Requirements:Comfortable working on the factory floor alongside technicians and weldersAbility to lift up to 25 lbs and stand for extended periodsPhysical dexterity required for crouching, kneeling, and working in varied positionsAbility to focus and operate effectively in a loud, hot factory environmentRequirements:Must be based in the United StatesMust be willing to work on-site at our headquarters in Austin, TexasWhat It Takes to Succeed at Aalo:We're building technology that will help reshape the future of energy. The pace is fast, the problems are difficult, and the expectations are high. Successful team members consistently demonstrate:Extreme Ownership — You take responsibility for outcomes, not just tasks.
You proactively identify problems, drive solutions, and follow through.A Passion for Solving Hard Problems — You are energized by challenges that others avoid and enjoy finding practical solutions to complex technical issues.A Sense of Urgency — You move quickly, make thoughtful decisions, and maintain momentum while balancing quality and execution. What We Offer:Competitive salary starting at $135,000Health, Dental, and Vision InsurancePaid Time OffCorporate Gym MembershipCandidates only.
