Role Overview

The Senior Director, Global Digital & Technology Systems Engineering operates primarily as the primary point of contact and strategic bridge to the Global Technology Solutions (Enterprise IT) function, ensuring all R&D systems align with Enterprise infrastructure, cybersecurity, identity management, and cloud platform standards. The role owns the end‑to‑end remit for systems engineering of externally developed platforms and solutions, integration engineering, and technical application lifecycles across the organization. It includes designing, configuring, and deploying HPC clusters and containerised environments, implementing observability frameworks, and architecting foundational AI and RAG pipelines.

Essential Functions

  • Enterprise IT Alignment & Collaboration: Serve as the single point of contact and strategic bridge to Global Technology Solutions, ensuring R&D systems align with global infrastructure and security standards while advocating for specialised technical requirements.
  • Platforms & Systems Engineering: Oversee engineering, architecture, and deployment strategies for platforms and systems, balancing on‑prem, hybrid cloud, and multi‑tenant SaaS environments. Design robust API layers, data buses, and observability frameworks to ensure seamless data interoperability and proactive system health management.
  • Foundational AI Architectures & Workflow Patterns: Act as the technical SME for RAG architecture, vector storage integrations, advanced chunking strategies, semantic retrieval layers, and agentic AI system patterns that handle multi‑modal AI inputs and outputs.
  • Change Management & Digital Adoption: Drive the technical change strategy for foundational infrastructure overhauls and cloud migrations in collaboration with GTS, guiding unified integration standards across development and vendor teams.
  • Governance & Risk Mitigation: Collaborate with Global Technology Solutions to implement secure AI proxy layers and gateways, ensuring proprietary data and intellectual property are sandboxed and compliant with regulatory requirements.
  • GRDTS Leadership: Lead, mentor, and manage a high‑performing team focused on systems engineering, fostering innovation, accountability, and professional development while ensuring regulatory compliance and operational excellence.

Key Capabilities

  • Enterprise‑to‑R&D Infrastructure Bridging: Liaison to global Enterprise IT and specialist advocacy for research needs.
  • External Platform Technical Assessment: Evaluate and stress‑test vendor solutions for scalability, security, and integration readiness.
  • Internal & Vendor Platform Integration: Build secure, unified integration layers for internal and third‑party applications.
  • Full‑Ecosystem Observability & Reliability: Implement real‑time telemetry across all platforms to maximize uptime.
  • Advanced AI Architecture Scaling: Plan and scale cloud, HPC, and AI environments, including enterprise RAG and secure AI gateways.
  • Technical Governance & Talent Upskilling: Drive adherence to architectural standards and reskill technical staff.

Key Competencies

  • Analytical Technical Due‑Diligence: Review vendor codebases, architecture diagrams, APIs, and SLAs to assess true engineering readiness.
  • Diplomatic Mindset: Navigate Enterprise IT processes and negotiate exceptions for specialised scientific stacks.
  • Ecosystem‑Level System Thinking: View internal and external platforms as a cohesive, scalable system.
  • Security‑First IP Stewardship: Protect Enterprise data and intellectual property across all environments.
  • Transformational Change Leadership: Coach and upskill staff to adopt unified technical standards.
  • Resilient Crisis Management: Lead technical operations during critical upgrades or outages.
