Senior Director, Content Design – Consumer & Developer Experience

We’re currently seeking a Senior Director of Content Design to lead our content discipline for the Consumer and Developer Experience Design team, which is part of the Experience Design organization.

Role Expectations

As a Senior Director of Content Design on the Consumer and Developer Experience Design team, you’ll lead a talented team of content designers and leaders and collaborate deeply with our product design and research teams. You’ll be responsible for identifying and advocating for high‑leverage opportunities with executive stakeholders and leading high‑impact, highly complex design projects that set the bar for experience excellence and business outcomes.

  • Content Design Expertise: Leverage established expertise and leadership in content design to elevate the quality and maturity of the design practice at Capital One
  • Leadership: Build a thriving community of designers who are well supported, trained for excellence, and able to collaborate with peers in multiple functions; set the vision and strategic direction for your team in close partnership with cross‑functional partners
  • Human‑Centered: Recognize and pursue opportunities where customer needs and business goals coincide, while reinforcing with teammates and partners the importance of collecting and considering diverse customer perspectives throughout the design process
  • Business‑Focused: Demonstrate mastery of products, processes, customers, competitors and broader industry trends, and apply this knowledge to predict shifts and shape how design should engage, uncover, and solve significant business challenges
  • Problem‑Solving: Engage with partners to influence the prioritization of technical advances that enable larger teams to design for better outcomes, ensuring teams use technical knowledge and data capabilities to serve bold technological solutions, data destinations and efficiency
  • Collaboration: Connect the dots across the organization, proactively bringing together executive partners in ways that drive coherent experiences, accelerate delivery and elevate the value of design
  • Communication: Present work to executive leaders and stakeholders, modeling a strategic human‑centered approach that integrates design frameworks, data and research insights to make the complex accessible, influence change and drive strategic direction

Basic Qualifications

  • At least 10 years of experience in leading content design teams and delivering products to market
  • At least 10 years of experience working with and contributing to an established design system
  • At least 3 years of experience managing managers

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a design toolkit that spans content design, product design, service design and design strategy
  • Deep experience shaping scope and opportunities in partnership with executive stakeholders and leading high‑impact, highly complex projects that set the bar for experience excellence
  • Deep experience partnering with product managers, engineers, marketing and analytics leaders across multiple business lines to shape strategy, OKRs, roadmaps and operating models
  • Deep experience interfacing with executive leadership to solve problems, influence key decisions and drive results across strategy, design, roadmaps and investments
  • Proficiency with web and mobile technologies and platforms, navigating technology considerations and constraints to drive sound product and experience decisions
  • Experience architecting AI‑assisted content workflows, intelligent taxonomy/metadata structures, or automated content generation engines
  • Expertise with design and prototyping tools such as Figma
  • Experience managing an interdisciplinary design team
  • Track record of guiding, mentoring, growing and inspiring design teams
  • Proficiency in business case development, tying product and user experience decisions to business value
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and relationship building across complex organizations
  • Exceptional people management and development skills

The minimum and maximum full‑time annual salaries for this role are listed below by location. Salaries are solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations. The actual annualized salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will be reflected only in the offer letter.

  • Chicago, IL: $245,100 – $279,800 for Sr. Director, Design
  • McLean, VA: $269,600 – $307,700 for Sr. Director, Design
  • New York, NY: $294,100 – $335,700 for Sr. Director, Design
  • Richmond, VA: $245,100 – $279,800 for Sr. Director, Design
  • Riverwoods, IL: $245,100 – $279,800 for Sr. Director, Design

This role is also eligible to earn performance‑based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonuses and/or long‑term incentives (LTI). Incentives could be discretionary or non‑discretionary depending on the plan.
