Position Overview
vcfo has been retained by Delta Millworks- an established, family-owned wood products manufacturer based inWimberley, Texas to conduct a nationwide search for an experienced, hands-on, and strategic Senior Financial Manager / Controller. The ideal candidate will live in the greater Austin, Texas, area; however, relocation may be considered for candidates with relevant industry experience.
This key leadership role is responsible for overseeing all accounting, financial reporting, payroll, treasury, compliance, and internal control functions while leading and developing the Accounting Team. The Sr. Controller will serve as a trusted business partner to executive leadership and work closely with an external fractional CFO to strengthen financial performance, improve decision-making, and support the company's continued growth.
The ideal candidate will possess deep manufacturing accounting expertise, strong leadership capabilities, and experience leveraging ERP systems to improve financial visibility and operational efficiency. Ideal candidate should have specific experience with manufacturing cost accounting, inventory management, standard costing, ERP leadership, and cash flow management in a wood products manufacturing environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead all accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, fixed assets, inventory accounting, and month-end close processes.
- Manage and develop the Accounting Manager and accounting staff through coaching, mentoring, performance management, and succession planning.
- Oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close activities, ensuring timely and accurate financial statements prepared in accordance with U.S. GAAP.
- Maintain and continuously improve internal controls, accounting policies, procedures, and financial reporting processes.
- Partner with executive leadership and the Fractional CFO to develop annual budgets, rolling forecasts, and long-range financial plans.
- Prepare monthly financial reporting packages including operating results, KPI dashboards, variance analyses, and management recommendations.
- Provide meaningful financial analysis and business insights to support strategic decision-making, profitability improvement, and operational performance.
- Oversee manufacturing accounting activities, including:
- Raw material inventory
- Work-in-process (WIP) inventory
- Standard costing
- Inventory reserves
- Physical inventory procedures
- Cost accounting and margin analysis
- Ensure inventory valuation and costing methodologies are maintained accurately within the ERP system.
- Analyze manufacturing variances and operational performance metrics, identifying opportunities to improve profitability and efficiency.
- Manage cash flow reporting, daily cash management activities, banking relationships, and working capital optimization.
- Oversee state and local tax compliance activities, including sales and use tax administration.
- Coordinate annual audits, tax engagements, and other reviews performed by external auditors, tax advisors, lenders, and regulatory agencies.
- Monitor compliance with federal, state, and local financial regulations and reporting requirements.
- Lead ERP optimization initiatives and identify opportunities to automate processes and strengthen financial reporting capabilities, with preference for NetSuite Manufacturing experience.
- Support strategic initiatives, capital expenditure analyses, acquisition opportunities, and other special projects as needed.
- Develop and document scalable accounting procedures to support future business growth.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- 10+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience.
- 5+ years of leadership experience managing accounting or finance teams.
- Strong manufacturing accounting experience, including:
- Standard costing
- Inventory valuation
- Cost accounting
- WIP accounting
- Production reporting
- Manufacturing variance analysis
- Demonstrated experience leading month-end close and financial reporting processes within a manufacturing environment.
- Experience preparing and analyzing financial statements in accordance with U.S. GAAP.
- Strong budgeting, forecasting, cash flow management, and financial planning experience.
- Proven ability to lead process improvements and implement best practices across accounting and finance functions.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including financial modeling, data analysis, and reporting automation.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities with exceptional attention to detail.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to present financial information to both financial and non-financial stakeholders.
- Deep understanding of sales and use tax compliance, preferably including Avalara administration.
- Strong understanding of banking, treasury, and working capital management.
- Experience with NetSuite ERP, preferably within a manufacturing environment.
- Ability to thrive in a hands-on, entrepreneurial, family-owned business environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- CPA designation strongly preferred.
- Master's degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration preferred.
- Experience implementing or optimizing ERP systems.
- Experience working with private-equity-backed, family-owned, or founder-led manufacturing companies.
- Lean manufacturing, process improvement, or continuous improvement experience is a plus.
