Controls Engineer – Automation Project

Project

Support the design, programming, debugging, and commissioning of a custom automation build project.

This is a custom automation/design and commissioning role—not production support.

Must-Have Experience

  • 5–10 years of relevant controls/automation experience
  • PLC/HMI programming, with Beckhoff strongly preferred
  • If no Beckhoff: strong Rockwell experience with Structured Text or C#
  • Custom machine/automation build experience
  • Strong troubleshooting, debugging, critical-thinking, and problem-solving skills
  • Genuine interest in hands-on support and debugging
  • Cognex vision experience is a plus
  • Working knowledge of electrical circuits, panels, pneumatics, hydraulics, robotics, VFDs, servos, and industrial communication networks
  • Education is secondary to relevant industry experience
  • Wastewater industry experience is not relevant/required

Responsibilities

  • Develop PLC/HMI controls software packages
  • Program robotic and controls equipment to customer specifications
  • Review customer specifications and ensure equipment functionality meets requirements
  • Support machine startup, commissioning, debugging, and customer acceptance
  • Develop equipment operation manuals and service documentation
  • Assist with controls/design reviews and functional checks
  • Provide technical support and end-user training
  • Perform preventative maintenance when required
  • Work directly with customers in potentially high-pressure environments
  • Maintain strong safety standards and professional customer relationships

Schedule & Project Duration

  • Design phase: 40–50 hours/week
  • Commissioning: 50–60 hours/week
  • Design through commissioning: approximately 16–18 weeks

Travel / Location

  • Installation/commissioning site: Baja, Mexico
  • Valid U.S. passport required before travel
  • Travel is expected approximately 50 weeks out, so candidates need to secure their passport well in advance
  • Candidates must be willing to work onsite 5 days/week
  • Non-local candidates are welcome, provided they can relocate/travel as required
  • For candidates relocating to Nashville for the project, their pay rate should account for per diem
  • Expenses covered for travel to Mexico

Ideal Candidate Profile

The strongest candidates will be controls/automation engineers with hands-on custom machine-building experience, particularly those with Beckhoff PLC/HMI programming and commissioning experience. Strong Rockwell candidates may also be considered if they have Structured Text or C# experience and are willing to learn Beckhoff.

Passport, travel availability, willingness to work extended hours during commissioning, and comfort with hands-on debugging are important screening points.
