  • The work consists of varied management, administrative, and supervisory duties. The wide variety of programs and services provided contributes to the complexity of the position.
  • The purpose of this position is to direct the operations of the Senior Center. Successful performance contributes to the efficient and effective delivery of programs and services to area seniors.
  • Directs Senior Center operations, including the senior nutrition program, day-to-day programs and operations, and state reporting; prepares Department of Transportation (DOT) and South Alabama Regional Council on Aging (SARCOA) reports.
  • Hires, trains, assigns, directs, supervises, evaluates, and disciplines personnel.
  • Directs the development and implementation of a variety of senior programs and services.
  • Develops and implements strategic short- and long-range plans.
  • Directs the preparation, service, and delivery of meals to center and homebound clients.
  • Develops and implements marketing strategies; develops brochures, advertisements, and flyers; updates social media; prepares newsletters, news releases, and calendars of events.
  • Establishes, forecasts, and monitors Senior Center budget; maintains financial records.
  • Oversees the development, review, updating, and implementation of Senior Center policies and procedures.
  • Prepares grant proposals and manages grant funds.
  • Ensures compliance with state Public Health policies and procedures.
  • Performs home visits and outreach efforts as required by SARCOA.
  • Oversees RSVP volunteers and related reporting.
  • Develops working relationships with other senior service organizations.
  • Drives the Senior Center bus as needed.
  • Maintains confidential files and records.
  • Performs related duties.

Qualifications

Special Requirements

  • Knowledge of Senior Center policies, procedures, goals, and objectives.
  • Knowledge of SARCOA policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of Elderly Nutrition Procedures Manual guidelines.
  • Knowledge of senior program management principles.
  • Knowledge of crafts and recreational activities.
  • Knowledge of DOT rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of budget management principles.
  • Knowledge of relevant federal and state laws, city ordinances, and department policies and procedures.
  • Skill in public relations.
  • Skill in the recruitment and training of volunteers.
  • Guidelines include grant requirements, the Elderly Nutrition Program Manual, ADA requirements, security and privacy laws, Alabama Department of Public Health guidelines, ALDOT and SARCOA regulations, other relevant state and federal guidelines, and city and department policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.
  • The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, or walking.
  • The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
  • The work is typically performed in an office and a senior center.
  • Contacts are typically with coworkers, other city staff, elected and appointed officials, representatives of various community agencies, ALDOT and SARCOA representatives, and the general public.
  • Contacts are typically to exchange information, motivate persons, resolve problems, and provide services.
