The role is responsible for key accounting areas including restricted funds, endowment, investments, capital assets, compliance filings, and audit support, and works cross functionally to strengthen processes, internal controls and the accuracy and timeliness of financial information.This position is primarily remote, offering flexibility for candidates throughout New England. Periodic travel is expected for team collaboration, training, and key meetings at AMC's Boston office or New Hampshire locations (Gorham and Bretton Woods). Candidates who prefer more in-person interaction may also choose a hybrid work arrangement based in Boston or Gorham.Core Accounting and Financial ReportingLead assigned aspects of the monthly, quarterly and year end close processes, including preparing and/or reviewing journal entries, accruals, reconciliations and analysesSupport accounting and reporting of revenue across programs and systemsEnsure that accounting is performed in accordance with organizational policies and procedures and accounting standardsIdentify accounting issues and recommend resolutionsEnsure documentation supports audit and control requirementsEvaluate accounting workflows and internal controls; recommend and implement process, system and technological improvements to increase efficiency, accuracy and consistencyDevelop and/or maintain accounting procedures and documentation for assigned areasManage assigned responsibilities accurately and within established timelines, escalating issues and competing priorities as neededInvestmentsManage the investment inbox and maintain organized, audit ready investment documentationCoordinate the processing, funding, and tracking of capital calls and related investment activityRecord quarterly investment activity and maintain key reconciliations, including investment rollforwards and investment cash activityAccounting for restricted fundsManage restricted fund balances in accordance with donor intent and record releases from restriction accurately and timelyCoordinate with accounting, development, and program teams to support proper recording and use of restricted funds and provide timely balance updates to stakeholdersMaintain endowment schedules, including fund documentation and purpose, spending classifications, and allocation of investment incomeSupport and advance efforts to enhance expense tracking for all restricted funds, including grants, and provide budget managers with meaningful, accurate reportsAMC Published BooksRecord and reconcile monthly accounting activity related to book distribution operationsPrepare biannual royalty reports and coordinate timely royalty paymentsMaintain book inventory accounting and related reconciliations to ensure accurate balances and reportingCapital Projects and Fixed AssetsManage accounting for capital projects, including assigning project codes, monitoring activity, performing reconciliations, and maintaining reports for management useMaintain the fixed asset ledger and related depreciation schedules, ensuring additions, disposals, and transfers are recorded accurately and timelyAudit and Compliance SupportCoordinate assigned aspects of the annual financial statement audit, including preparing schedules, responding to auditor requests, and ensuring timely completion of deliverablesPrepare supporting schedules and analyses for Form 990 and other compliance filings, including tracking lobbying activities and related disclosuresPrepare and support timely compliance filings for local, state, and federal agenciesCross-Functional & Operational Support Provide guidance, training or review support to less experienced accounting staff, as assignedServe as an accounting resource to development, program, operations, and other departments for assigned areasCommunicate accounting requirements, deadlines, and fund balance information to internal stakeholdersPartner with management to support reporting and analysis needsLeverage technology in performance of work and support digital transformation projects, as requestedPerform other projects and duties as assignedQualificationsWhat AMC is Looking ForRequiredBachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field5+ years of progressively responsible accounting experienceStrong knowledge of general ledger accounting, reconciliations, month-end close and financial reportingExperience with complex nonprofit accounting, such as restricted funds, endowments, and investmentsAbility to manage multiple responsibilities in a deadline-driven environmentAdvanced Excel skills and proficiency with a major accounting system (Sage Intacct preferred).PreferredExperience working in a nonprofit or mission-driven organizationExperience supporting annual audits, Form 990 preparation and other regulatory compliance filingsCore CompetenciesTechnical accounting and systems knowledgeOwnership and accountabilityAbility to interpret and apply accounting guidance and use professional judgementAccuracy and attention to detailAnalytical and problem-solving skillsStrong organizational, time-management and communication skillsAbility to work independently and collaboratively across functionsProactive and process improvement mindsetWhat AMC Can Offer YouSalary rangeBoston Based: $66,157 - $89,265Other Northeast Based locations: $57,528 - $77,622We are committed to fair compensation practices, and we encourage qualified candidates to apply. The initial salary represents our starting point, and our compensation philosophy is designed to reward and recognize the contributions of our employees as they grow within the organization. External candidates typically begin their journey with us at the starting point of the salary range.
