About the Role
The Florida Tech Department of Security Officers is responsible for campus surveillance and patrol of buildings to provide a visible presence that deters crime. Officers respond to all emergencies and routine calls for service in a timely manner and coordinate effectively with police, fire, and emergency medical personnel. The position requires minor physical exertion, including pushing, pulling, carrying, and lifting up to 25 pounds, and the ability to stand and/or walk for extended periods without rest or assistance. Department of Security Officers operate within a 24‑hour, 7‑day‑a‑week environment. Due to the nature of the position, officers are expected to work an 80‑hour pay cycle with a fluctuating schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Responsibilities
- Serve as a visible and proactive university representative 24/7, providing a secure environment for students, affiliates, and visitors.
- Conduct patrols via foot, bicycle, golf cart, and vehicle, provide services, access functions, and escorts as requested.
- Provide safety awareness through daily contact with the university community, offering general safety information, directions, and parking information.
- Identify actual or potential safety hazards or conditions and coordinate a resolution with the appropriate department or area.
- Assist university personnel with potential violations of University policy and behavioral expectations that may be disruptive to the mission.
- Respond to all emergencies, coordinate law enforcement, medical, and/or fire assistance, provide a proactive role after the emergency, and make appropriate notifications on campus.
- Prepare incident reports, maintain activity logs, use the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system, answer telephone calls, and dispatch calls via two‑way radio.
- Work special events to provide traffic, parking, and crowd control as needed.
- Assist parking program by monitoring parking areas, issuing citations, and maintaining access to fire lanes, handicap spaces, and roadways owned or controlled by the University.
- Perform initial Title IX investigations, ensuring appropriate information and counseling are provided to the complainant and forwarded to appropriate staff.
- Other duties assigned by the Department of Security administration or shift supervisors.
- May be required to work during emergency situations and remain at the university until the situation is resolved.
- Work designated alternate hours and perform other responsibilities as needed.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma required.
- Preferred: additional certifications, licensing, degrees, and/or training in law enforcement, security, or related fields.
- Must be able to obtain a State of Florida, Class D: Security Officer License and a State of Florida, Class G: Armed Security Officer License within 30 days of hire date.
- Must have a valid Florida driver’s license and maintain a good driving record according to Florida Tech guidelines.
- Ability to complete all basic training requirements and actively participate in the department’s Field Training Program.
- Maintain proficiency in weapons familiarization in accordance with departmental standards.
