Security Officer

Provide twenty four hour security services for assigned City facilities and property, including vehicles and equipment; protect facilities from unlawful intrusion and criminal acts and ensure public safety. This is a safety sensitive position subject to random drug/alcohol testing.

Essential functions may include, but are not limited to the functions listed below. Must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without a reasonable accommodation.

  1. Provide security services for assigned City facilities and vehicles; conduct periodic patrols by foot, bicycle or vehicle to ensure only authorized personnel are on facility grounds, on city property or in city vehicles.
  2. Regulate the flow of City employees and the public on facility premises and/or city property to ensure safety; provide crowd and traffic control as needed.
  3. May ensure public and/or animal safety during special events at assigned facility; coordinate with personnel as needed.
  4. Respond to calls for service and reports of crimes in progress; call for emergency medical or police services as needed; assist law enforcement agencies as needed.
  5. Conduct preliminary investigations to determine if a crime has been committed; determine whether further action is warranted; document incidents and prepare reports.
  6. May conduct periodic fire and safety hazard inspections of City facilities; develop recommendations for enhancing security precautions.
  7. May monitor and operate a security computer system; inspect and verify property and/or vehicles entering and leaving facilities.
  8. Provide general assistance to the public; receive and document all lost and found articles; respond to and resolve inquiries.
  9. Prepare a variety of reports regarding security enforcement activities.

Supplemental functions:

  1. Issue parking citations as required.
  2. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Education directly related to the minimum requirements below may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis. High school diploma or GED; and Two (2) years of security, customer service, or parking operations experience. Additional requirements: Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver's License, or the ability to obtain by date of hire. Possession of a City Operator's Permit (COP) within six (6) months from date of hire. Possession of an expandable baton certificate within six (6) months from date of hire into position. Possession of an appropriate valid defensive driver course, handcuffing & chemical weapon (OC) course certificate within six (6) months from date of hire into position.

Field environment; travel from site to site; exposure to potentially hostile environments; inclement weather conditions. Essential and supplemental functions may require maintaining physical conditions necessary for standing or walking for prolonged periods of time; running and light carrying.
