Security Engineer

Contract Position

Location: Mid Atlantic, travel from Philly, Baltimore, DC – travel expense reimbursed.

Travel: 50% (2 weeks per month)

Duration: 2 years

Primary Purpose

The IT Sr. Systems Engineer I position serves as a senior technical role within the IT department. It requires demonstrated experience in information technology, problem‑solving skills, and the ability to work effectively independently, as a mentor and as part of a team. The candidate will provide technical insights driving the design, implementation, and optimization of complex systems under the guidance of a Principal Engineer or Manager. They collaborate with IT architecture to define strategy and work with various teams to implement high‑quality systems to meet business requirements. Responsibilities include delivering and supporting IT infrastructure, product and platform solutions, and designing and delivering complex IT system initiatives, including cloud, non‑cloud, and hybrid‑cloud systems. The engineer influences other IT teams, leadership, business partners, vendors, and project/design teams in all aspects of secure and reliable hosting of applications throughout a large and complex enterprise and real‑time operational environments.

Primary Duties and Accountabilities

  • Lead discussions with business partners and vendors to gather information; consult with leadership, architecture, project teams, and end users to identify system requirements and perform feasibility analyses for security and technical architecture changes. Write and disseminate system specifications, logical and physical architecture diagrams, and implementation plans.
  • Deliver practical, efficient, and cost‑effective solutions that satisfy business needs, including hands‑on configuration, troubleshooting, optimization, and supporting metrics.
  • Work closely with others to develop future plans, resource requirements, migration strategies, and project schedules. Provide oversight for less experienced engineers.
  • Design, support, and maintain custom system integration with other platforms specific to customer needs; remain current on emerging IT systems technologies.
  • Identify and capture risks and issues following the defined process; provide supporting data to leadership and peers.
  • Maintain knowledge of and compliance with preferred technologies, methodologies, standards, and policies; demonstrate strong debugging and problem‑solving skills and participate in peer code reviews.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Computer Networking and 4–7 years of experience in IT infrastructure design, application design, cloud computing, disaster recovery, or 6–9 years of relevant experience with system administration. Demonstrated ability to design and document processes and procedures, transition work to operational teams, and provide financial impact analysis. Experience with monitoring tools and configuring monitoring settings. Knowledge of PowerShell, Ansible, or similar scripting tools for automation.

Preferred Qualifications

Certifications such as NERC‑CIP, FERC, AZ‑900. Deeper understanding of programming languages and the ability to solve engineering problems of increasing difficulty. Experience building highly scalable applications.

Notes

  • 50% travel: 2 weeks per month onsite (Monday‑Thursday), remote the other 2 weeks.
  • Different locations and utilities.
  • Vendor will support issues on ADMS systems – Monark Niche application.
  • Servers include Oracle Linux OS and some Windows OS.
  • Utility industry experience (Operational IT, SCADA, OMS) is a high preference.
