The primary purpose of this position is to support the District Nurse/Student Health Specialist in order to optimize the delivery of comprehensive school health services. All duties are to be performed as defined in the Illinois Nursing Act and in accordance with district policy and procedures. The individuals in this position will work collaboratively with building staff, and under the direction of the District Nurse/Student Health Specialist to ensure that the health, medical and safety needs of all students are addressed.
Essential Job Functions include: focusing on customer service and acting as a liaison between nurse-parent and teacher-parent when necessary, making decisions that demonstrate support of the mission, vision and goals of the district and are in the best interest of the children under the medical nurse's care, developing plans for student care based on assessment, interventions and identification of outcomes and the evaluation of care and providing nursing assessment and interventions, reporting any health/medical/safety issues that surface to the district nurse/student health specialist to ensure that any areas of concern are addressed, maintaining student health examination and immunization files of students and following up with students to ensure compliance with state regulations, FERPA and district policy, dispensing medications and logging information into daily medication records under the direction of the District Nurse/Student Health Specialist, accompanying child on bus when appropriate, assisting nurse in follow-up contacts concerning delinquent physicals and immunizations, completing Student Accident and Medication Incident Reports and submitting them to the District Nurse/Health Student Specialist and Building and District Administration when appropriate, being aware of and able to carry out emergency health care plans, maintaining accurate student health office visits and documentation in current database, maintaining a log of nursing procedures performed at school, contacting parents/emergency contacts of all ill/injured students, monitoring the student and preparing them to go home if necessary, managing daily attendance for the school on a daily basis, implementing the established protocols for providing first aid care to sick and injured students and staff, assisting nurse with student screenings including vision, hearing and dental, monitoring students when administering medication according to the instructions of the physician and the approval of the school nurse/student health specialist, assisting in maintaining necessary supplies in the health office, observing students on a regular basis to detect health needs and reporting concerns to the district nurse, maintaining records, preparing reports, and performing clerical work as required, communicating student's daily health and experiences to the parents as appropriate, maintaining accurate health files and tracking system for Illinois state reports, maintaining communication and seeking guidance from the district nurse/student health specialist, communicating with physicians and agencies as necessary, adhering to school policies, procedures and protocols as they pertain to the job description, working under the license of the District Nurse and Health Student Specialist, utilizing universal precautions when dealing with any bodily fluids, communicating student medical concerns/regimes to the Director of Student Services and to staff members that have direct interaction with students, making appropriate assessment and referrals for suspected abuse/neglect as a mandated reporter, participating in professional development opportunities, and performing such other tasks and assuming such other responsibilities as may from time to time be assigned by the administration.
Education, Certification, Qualifications Profile includes: high school diploma, first aid and CPR for infants and adult instruction should be completed within six months following employment for those not having previously completed such a course, current Illinois LPN license required. RN or BSN License preferred, understand health and nursing practices and procedures, experience working with school information systems and online databases, and such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
Skills, Knowledge, Abilities include: ability to work independently, stay on-task, multi-task and take responsibility to complete assigned projects in a timely and efficient manner, ability to stay current with First Aid and CPR certification as well as licensure, ability to communicate effectively with parents, students, teachers, administration and community members, ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others in the course of the workday, ability to use e-mail and office equipment effectively, ability to work with students individually or in group settings, ability to read, write and speak English sufficient to communicate with students and staff and to assist students with instruction, ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide, and perform basic arithmetic operations as needed to assist students, ability to work with a diverse group of individuals and is sensitive to individual differences, ability to maintain confidentiality of information regarding students, employees and others, ability to establish a supportive and compassionate relationship with students, ability to maintain composure in stressful situations and adapt in response to changing conditions, ability to report work orally or in writing to supervisor as required, and ability to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form.
Travel Requirement includes: travel between schools, across district may be required at a minimum.
Evaluation includes: the position will be evaluated at least once annually, by the last employment day in April by the building administration with input from nurses/student health specialists.
Work Environment includes: indoor classrooms/school exposure to: student noise, work in standard school building environment, outdoor schoolyard and grounds, field trips: exposure to temperatures (hot, warm, cool & Cold).
