Licensed School Nurse

Under the direction of the Director of Special Education and the Building Principal, the Licensed School Nurse provides preventative health services to facilitate the student's optimal physical, mental, emotional and social growth and development. The incumbent is responsible for the maintenance of student health records and assures health services support staff are trained appropriately on protocols outlined in the health records.

Task Description Assess health status and perform first aid, emergency care and other illness interventions according to school district 1 guidelines. Delegate health care tasks to paraprofessional staff and supervise the delivery of those tasks, according to licensure, scope of school nursing practice, and the Minnesota Nurse Practice Act. Administer medication and/or specialized health care treatments to students as directed by physicians and authorized by parents or guardians. Assess the health and developmental status of the school age student, through district health screening programs. Facilitate referrals to health care agencies or facilities when requested. Promote and maintain health and well-being of students, families and school personnel by health teaching and health counseling. Develop Individual Health/Emergency Plans for those students with special health needs. Communicate with families, teachers, and staff regarding the development and implementation of these plans. Periodically evaluate plans and revise as necessary. Prevent and control communicable disease through health education, assessment of student health status, and implementation of the state immunization law. When required, participate in staffings regarding students with special needs and assume responsibility for contributions to the health component of the IEP (Individual Education Plan). Maintain health records on all student enrolled in the school. Excuse or readmit students for health reasons in accordance with the building procedure and county health department exclusion guidelines. Train and supervise volunteers/staff whenever they are used in the health services program. Is responsible for the safety and well-being of themselves and others by maintaining a safe work environment and encouraging others to follow district safety policies and procedures. Supports district goals and promotes an environment that is respectful for all. Works collaboratively with other staff to focus on the needs of the learner. Maintains a customer focus that conveys a welcome attitude, an adaptability to change, and a desire for continuous improvement. Performs other duties that may be assigned by supervisor in accordance with this classification.

Qualified candidates will hold a School Nurse license issued by the Minnesota Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board and hold current RN certification from the Minnesota Board of Nursing. Current CPR and First Aid certification required. The incumbent should have knowledge, skills, and abilities in the areas of public/community health, communicable disease, health advocacy, and applicable laws and regulations associated with school health programs.
